My new STI was vandalized, need advice

They could probably blend within the fender itself without involving other panels. If they blend into the door, then they have to deal with everything involved with painting the door. Like removing the window molding, the side mirror, the door handle, masking the entire car. Thats a lot of extra labor considering the paint on the door is perfect already.

I don't see why they cant sand out the scratches and make it smooth. Spray a little primer on the area of the scratches. Sand that smooth. Then spray the color over the primer and a little past to do the blending. Depending on where the scratches are, they could blend within the fender. Then re clear the whole fender. Since the fender would be off the car, you wont have to worry about over spray or any other damage.

While I'm not a professional painter, I have did some pretty good paintwork with a rattle can on cars that I've fixed up in the past. I try to not repaint anymore then I have too. My car has had single panels repainted (by a professional) with no blending. While the match may not be 100% (it's very close) I'd much rather have the paintwork localized to the one panel with damage, then extended to panels with good paint. I could be wrong, but I don't think blending into the door is necessary. Maybe what he could do and go with my idea, and if it doesn't turn out, then blend into the door, hood, A piller and whatever else they need to do. Might as well have the whole car repainted.

Hey guys - yeah, that's exactly what the shop is going to do - essentially repair the fender only, blend only within the limits of the fender and not go past it - it'll save money, labor and keep original panels original.

I did quite a bit of research and called around and aside from this being a great shop, I was assured by the owner that this method would yield the result I'm looking for.

There are limits to what detailers can do - something this extensive is simply best left to body shops as there is definite sanding and priming to do.

I'm sure I'll never find the dirt bag that did this to my new car - people like this thrive on getting away with this. What's absurd is how these people are cowards - if you've got a problem with someone, tell it to their face rather than hitting them when they're vulnerable, not around, and causing them financial (and many other sorts) of damage.

There really should be much more severe punishment for senseless crime - the kind of crime that speaks volumes about a person's stability, ability to function within the limits of society... vandalizing property is something I never got, never participated in, so therefore I don't understand it.

One thing is for sure - there is no shortage of scumbags roaming the earth.

You got really hosed......a lot like the 'vette I mentioned above. Brand new, 5 days old, 60 miles and virtually every panel had to be fixed.

I wish you the best. Do the research for the best body guy you can find.....they will make it come out fine. I didn't get a good one and should have gone with a different one that I had previously interviewed. Oh well, never again.

Give us an update on how it comes out and what they did to it. Keep smiling.......and just repeat to yourself....."it's just plastic & steel".....it's just plastic & steel"......."it's just plastic & steel"........that little trick kept me from really blowing a gasket!!

Good luck with the Z.

See ya. :wavey

Many of you fellas are making assumptions about this repair/paint job that

aren't based on facts. I'm not mocking or trying to be demeaning in anyway,

but if you really want to know more - get the facts - then do more research.

Your "opinions" will change. And for the better; not just for yourselves but also

for this forum.

Tarik,

I think you should insist on having the door blended.

Flashtime - they are blending - not in to the door and hood, but from the damaged area outwards. Because the damage is isolated to one panel, he'll be able to isolate the repair to the same panel.

I have spent about 3 hours talking to the owner about how this will be handled. He has 30+ years of experience repairing exotics, and the shop is full of very expensive cars (my Subaru was probably the least of the high dollar cars there). I have confidence in what he is doing. I'm hopefull this will all turn out ok in the end :)

I hope it works out well. Really.

I've seen "high-end" shops and guys with decades of experience do all sorts

stuff. That's not to say your shop is one of them... Anyhow, i do understand

what he plans to do. Good luck!

Flashtime,

The above is what really has me wondering about some of your posts. I can tell you have a lot of painting knowledge but you aren't posting much up, and you tell people (OP included) to find a good shop but then you post the above, which I very much agree with. It is damn near impossible to find a good paint shop, its much like finding a good detailer, SOOO many hacks, very few good ones out there. Anyway, just hoping you share some of your insight.

Yakky,

I own a small body shop and do all the paint work myself. And minor repairs like

this one. It's a lot of information to go over, as i have in the other forums. And

rather than explainings things again, it's a bit easier to point to those forums.

Seriously, even seasoned pros here can a learn a thing or two. Like any other

discipline, paint/body is an art that go into great details. Autopia is another

Rome for me, so i try not to go overboard on paint/body topics; just steer them

to the right forum(s) with pros that are enthusiasts with lots of knowledge

and skill. Here, im a wannabe detailer.

Cool, IMO, don't be so hesitant to provide a bit more info, a lot of us are curious about body repair stuff. Additional knowledge is appreciated.

Man, that really sucks.

Can't help but be reminded of this exchange in Pulp Fiction:

Lance: Still got your Malibu?

Vincent: Aw, man. You know what some ****** did the other day?

Lance: What?

Vincent: ******* keyed it.

Lance: Oh, man, that's ****** up.

Vincent: Tell me about it. I had it in storage for three years, it was out for five days and some dickless piece of sh*t ****** with it.

Lance: They should be ******* killed. No trial, no jury, straight to execution.

Vincent: Boy, I wish I could've caught him doing it. I'd have given anything to catch that a$$hole doing it. It'd been worth him doing it just so I could've caught him doing it.

Lance: What a ******!

Vincent: What's more chickenshit than ******** with a man's automobile? I mean, don't **** with another man's vehicle.

Lance: You don't do it.

Vincent: It's just against the rules.
