My New Nikon 3100

Well, I finally pulled the plug and got myself a real camera, the Nikon 3100, with so many cameras on the market and so much information is overwhelming trying to figure out which one was the best. I settled on the Nikon 3100 mostly because I saw a lot of positive feedback, and so far I'm very happy with it.



It just happens that I had a detail job, so after 325 pictures, here are some of my best ones, I think they are ok for a first-time user?



With that said I'd like to know if you guys have any tips or settings that have worked better for you?

Yes, congratulations on your new camera. First impression is your photos look a bit underexposed. The photo of the car hood and the cloud reflections is very interesting and might be something you want to play around with by taking several shots like that from different distances and angles?



Just take lots and lots of pictures and be sure to keep them all until you have the time to get to your computer and down load them. Sometimes you get a great picture by "accident" and you don't want to lose it.
 
That's cheating! Can you take a BAD picture of a Lamborghini?? Lol!



A new camera is on my wish list, too. I look forward to hearing more feedback in the future with your new Nikon. Congrats!
 
Man that's a nice lambo there. Not a big camera guy myself but I Looked that one up and it sure does look nice. Be sure and learn on of the post processing softwares now too like gimp or photoshop as that can make a huge difference of course.

Meh, I think your time is better spent improving your images without photoshop. I used to spend hours on the computer manipulating images. Its a waste of time, get the shot right and you don't need to do anything else. Don't get me wrong, PS or Gimp is great if you need to fix a special shot, but don't rely on it.

I really like to understand and use the features that the camera has to offer. I'm already thinking that I need to invest in lenses for real close up shoots? I have the standard 18/55 lenses that came with the camera.

The best first-purchase you can make is a 50mm f/1.8 prime lens. It's very versatile and will teach you a lot about shooting.

I'm trying to learn as much as possible, but I'm already suffering from the "Want to Run" before I walk syndrome, so I had to go back and work with the automatic settings before I can attempt the manual settings. The one thing I think I need is a set of lenses that will allow me for even closer shoots? but so far I like the camera a lot.

Not necessarily; you really have to get used to using manual focus for close shots -- that much is vital.
