My new 2003 Toyota Camry LE....

Hey guys, is there a n00b click and brag forum? I looked but didn't see where n00bs were posting.. this section seems to be full of amazing pros...

anyways, someone at toyotanation shared this site with me. I'm very impressed, and hope to learn a lot from it. (I've been reading for about 2 weeks now)

This is my new (to me) 03 Camry LE. Overall it was taken pretty good care of. it was a 72 year old man, but it doesn't seem like he ran it through the car wash to many times. a few scratches here and there (mostly on plastic).

to the touch it was pretty bad though. The paint was full of impurities.

So I spent about 6 hours trying to fix and protect the paint for the next 10 years.

My Proccess:

I am a poor student, so I don't have a whole lot of resources to buy detailing stuff. but I do have a decent collection.

Wash:

- got a brush, and a cloth, used Eagle One carwash and bon ami (sp?) on the tries. Nothing fancy here.

- Car, rinsed it off with light pressure from the hose.

- useing a microfiber mitt (lost my sheepskin, will get another one) started with the top and worked my way down useing lots of suds and light pressure from the mitt.

- Did roof/windows, then rinsed

- Front end, rinse (keeping the entire car wet)

- Left side top ,

- right side top, rinse (keeping car wet)

- rear end, rinse

- then went along the lower 1/3rd of the car and got most of the mud, expecially behind wheel wells and front bumper.

-Rinsed the whole car to make sure to get all the soap off.

-Took off hose nozzle, and rinsed it that way (so that most of the water runs off I guess.. less water is standing on the car after doing that than when rinsing with nozzle)

Dry:

- Got a leaf blower and blew the water out of all the lines, cracks, and lamps.

- Dried with microfiber towels using the chase method (one to get most of the water, another to get the rest)

detail:

- Invisible glass one the windows

- Eagle One tire shine

Prep:

- Clayed the car useing Mothers clay. (used up about 2/3rds of the QD spray, is that normal?)

- Used mequires 3 step paint repair system. Fix, shine, protect.

- added a coat of carnuba (sp?) wax.

and thats pretty much it.

I have a couple of questions.

1) what else should I do? there are still swirl marks in the paint, def. better than before, but still there.

2) did I do it right?

3) is it bad to get invisible glass anywhere but the window (molding, paint etc.) ?

4) POLEN. What the CRAP... 30 minutes after I wash it... its coated in yellow crap. is there anything I can do to make this car less pollen attractive? :help:

Thanks! I would really like some comments!

Thanks! I'm not sure I like the color yet.. its weird.. like a mix between green, blue, and gray..

I needed a realiable car to get from point A to point B without breaking.. so hopefully this will do the trick!

First off, the car looks great. I really like the tire gloss. As for the swirls, the mequiars 3 step system is good for cleaning up the paint from contaminants, however it isnt getting too abrasive to fix swirls. You will need a more abrasive polish, if looking over the counter you might want to try ScratchX by hand or even Meguiars #81 Hand Polish (I believe that is the correct number for it) Good luck, continue to ask questions if you have any.

I have scratchX.. but I was afraid to use it... lol what are the risks of me messing something up?

BTW: do you guys use simple green on anything? that also seems a little dangerous... but I know some people use it (expecially on the engines I guess.

Really nice job, just goes to show you don't have to spend a fortune on products to get excellent results.

You might want to try Meguiars #9 in place of the paint cleaner in the Meguiars 3 step system. It has mild abrasives that break down quickly, even by hand. Should really help with those light swirls.

It has 31,000 miles on it.. bumper to bumper warrentee till 36,000, then drive-train till 100,000.

thanks! I'll try #9, see what happens.. next paycheck :lol

how often should I be washing my car? right now, to keep it looking nice, I'm having to do it every 3-7 days or so... (quick washes..)

(unfortuantly, I washed the car yesterday when it was prefectly sunny outside (as you can see) and we had tornados last night... :hairpull so now it needs to be washed again.)
