My leather needs an intervention....

So I was cleaning the interior of my `97 BMW 528i and noticed how bad the leather is looking. The driver's seat is the worst, it is dirty (noticibly darker than the other seats in the car, and the rear head rest backs are very hard. Should I go with leatherique or Color-Plus? I have seen the Color-Plus system results in person and it looks amazing! I think that a rejuvenator, cleaner and a small amount of dye are what I am going to need.

Experts please direct me.....:cooleek::cooleek::bow

Well, you'll want to clean it first, before you consider using dye.

Leatherique or Leather Masters are both great products.

Leatherique

I did find that purchasing Leatherique from the main Leatherique site is 30 dollars cheaper for the 30oz Kit than from Autogeek online, must be some manufacturer promo.

Apply and agitate per instructions on the bottle. Condition afterwards, preferably in a warm, dry environment. (Garage)

Props to a fellow fiver owner. :chuckle:

You may need a stronger cleaner than a regular leather cleaner. On pale leathers it is likely to be dye transfer that is making the leather look much dirtier. This is not dirt and cannot be removed in the same way. Dye transfer has redyed the leather and may have soaked into the finish. Using a cleaner that has been specifically formulated for this problem will give the best results together with dwell time.

Conditioning will not be of any benefit but using a leather protector will help inhibit this type of problem from happening again and make future cleaning easier.

Leather needs moisture so the need for certain conditions when cleaning and protecting are unnecessary.

Cleaning is a straightforward and simple process but the removal of dye transfer can be much harder depending on the strength of the dyes and the length of time it has been on there.

Last weekend we saw a new car that had fairly bad dye transfer from a school blazer. The dye had been building up over the last 6 months and no protecotr had been used on the leather. We could not remove it all even with solvents, this will now have to be recoloured. It is important to remove as much dye as possible before recolouring as it will simply bleed back through if there are any loose residues left.

Hope this helps

You sure you got the right leather master site. Cause all I see it assless straps leather pants

Hello

I have to recommend the Wolfgang Leather cleaner! That stuff foams up nicely, is easy to work in and is a very effective water cleaner. Its probably one of the best i have used.

I also have the Buffalo branded cleaner too, this is intreasting as it wont foam, not even with a brush but after about 30-50-seconds of working it in when you rub with an MF cloth it really takes out the dirt! Its almost like it softens and lifts its up so im un decided on that product.

I have to say the protector from Buffalo is excellent and at 5 weeks after the first clean and application my leather is still very soft and supple and noticbly cleaner then other leather products i used.

I have the Buffalo conditioner which really did have a heady smell during application and after 5 weeks it still has leather smell. In terms of cleannes and softeness i would say it was better a week ago. I dont think this is designed to last as long but if you want along term smell this has it!

Finally of the latest products i have tried is the WG leather conditioner/protector. Very mild smell (compared to buffalo atleast!) you apply with the applicator damp. It tends to leave a dry residue on the leather, you buff that and you get a consistant matt finish. By far one of the best looking i have tried, a little goes along way, it comes in a 16oz container.

I got the WG stuff in an interior kit and it has the vinyl protectant too, super satin finish. So tasteful, so upmarket! Light coconut scent, no stickyness or streaking and lasts a good month on my dashes!
