Hey guys I received my products yesterday and spent some time on the hood of my 97 Jetta. Paint has 150k miles and is in bad shape as you can see.

left side is finished and right side is washed but nothing else.

clay bar

Optimum Hyper yellow pad

Optimum Hyper orange pad

Optimum polish white pad

#21 blue pad

As you can say the paint was bad, and although it doesnt look great I really enjoyed it and want to go out there and keep working on it. Unfortunately I ran out of daylight.

Im sorry for the crappy pics but it was heavy overcast and approaching dusk. Some of those spots on there are etching I coudnt remove and some are chips. I really spent some time working the compound in so I wonder if I want all the etching gone should I try wetsanding?

Also, If I want to redo the hood can I just clay bar and start over with the compound or should I do something else first.

Thanks and dont be too harsh...this was my first try:sadwavey:

Nice start!!

Black is such a fun color to work on...Actually black vehicles are my favorite color to work on!

regarding your question: If you want to polish some more - assuming that there are no contaminants that have bonded since the last polishing (which would be unlikely if you waited a minimal amount of time between sessions) just make sure the panel is clean I don't see the need to re-clay.

What all equipment and process are you using. Give a bit more info. Also, I wouldnt wetsand if you only have a udm. I dont think there is much success removing the sand scracthes with the udm/pc

Hmm not sure what else to say:

clay bar

Optimum Hyper yellow pad apx 5 mins per 2x2

Optimum Hyper orange pad " " " " "

Optimum polish white pad

#21 blue pad

All applied with UDM and removed with MF towel

Hey man, (BlackSheepSquad on Vortex)

Looks like you made a dent in it...

How long are you working the products? What speed? How much on the pads?

The key to the optimum products is to work them for a pretty long time, at high speed, using as little as possible.

Also that Uni-black is HARD! Good luck.

Hey man!

Working the OHC for about 10 minutes per 2x2 on a yellow and orange cutting pad at 6 on the UDM. I tried a variation of different amounts of pressure.

The polish was more like 5 minutes on a white pad at setting 4.

Very good for a first time mate! You are already doing better than many people that have been doing this for 10+ years. I find that #21 is not that stellar though, collinite outlasts it and looks nicer, especially on black.

Some suggestions for you as a beginner: buy A LOT more microfibers than you think you need and do not buy them from autogeek, also wash your microfibers 3 times, once with soap and 2 times without in hot water. Work the polish longer than you think it needs it, while you did an amazing job on that hood I can see a little bit of micro-marring from not breaking down the optimum polish 100%. You cannot work optimum polish too long, that is one upside of optimum among others.

Thanks everybody for the help and encouragement. It rained all day yesterday and doesnt look good this morning, anxious to get out there and give it another crack.

Ron about the mf's, i noticed how fast i was going through them so i bought a huge bag from Costco. Can you wash them in your home washing machine without mucking it up?
