My Dad is in his mid-70s and washes his own vehicles

Uses ONR most of the time, occasionally will use a hose and conventional car wash soap.

Bought his Nissan Frontier in September 2011. I polished it and sealed with Opti-Seal, since then I think he's used Optimum Car Wax and Clearkote Quikshine every 5-6 months. This is how his paint looked today BEFORE any polishing:

Different color is due to the variable lighting in the garage. Whole truck was like this. Nary a swirl to be found.

Anyway, reason I was there was to put Optimum Coating on it as his Christmas gift.

Opti-Coat Primer and Optimum Coating (pro):

This is my Mom's Lexus, Opti-Guard (what OC pro was called then) was applied in September 2009. It too is swirl free. Still beads like it did soon after it was applied.

I'll be 65 in Aug and hope I feel that good in ten years. I still can do a couple of details a week but 5-6 a month is plenty.

This must be a testimony for Opti Seal and ONR.

Nearly swirl free? Love it.

Also Ivan surprised at the huge color difference from lighting change.

Neat!

Nice car detailing Scott. I wish my pop was around still. He loved keeping his cars immaculate. Value the time with your old man!

Hopefully this bodes well for me. No way I am going to be able to retire at 65 (nor will I probably want to) so it's encouraging that my Dad still has no real issues washing both his Frontier and my Mom's ES350. But the main point is that if he can keep his vehicles swirl free (one without Opti-Coat...at least until yesterday), we all should be able to with proper washing techniques.

I am curious.

How much teaching did it take for him to get a swirl free method?

Is he naturally good at detailing? Did you get the genes?

Or did he have a great teacher?

Or none of the above... Great product makes it simple?

Some have said that Opti Seal does little to protect paint.

This doesn't seem to be the case, as 5 to 6 months and is looking great.

Do you think the seal helped, or just your dad's method?

Scottwax- Wow, I'm really impressed by the lack of marring!  Way to go, Dad.  And that truck can't be the easiest vehicle to do either.

My late father was the same way with regard to keeping up with stuff late in life.  He didn't get into detailing until his early 70s when he bought his '84 Jag and from then on he helped me with the weekly detailing chores right up through his mid-80s.  Note that he was still doing weights and cardio right up until the last few months of his life (made it to 87), which undoubtedly factored in.

I can definitely bet he's passed on those genes onto you! Getting stronger as you get older!!!

He's the one who got me started when I was about 12 and helping him clean the cars.

I taught him how to use ONR, together we washed my Mom's then ES300 in less than 10 minutes. I applied Opti-Seal when he first got the truck, since then if he has waxed it he used Optimum Car Wax. I get several months out of OS, so it works well for me.

Just another visual proof that proper washing is the key along with the ease and speed ONR to keep you finish flawless! That's cool that your dad is still washing at a detailer level at that age! Most just pay and take it somewhere.

My Dad found out he had high blood pressure in his mid 40s. He lost about 30 pounds (he was never what you'd consider overweight), cut out sodium, started eating less red meat and more fruits and vegetables; in fact, he's become quite the cook. No longer just the typical Dad stuff (grilling meat, pancakes) but gourmet, low fat and calorie meals. Walks regularly around the neighborhood or at the gym. My Mom is in excellent health too, which is good because now that my Dad is finally retired, they do a lot of traveling.

He won't let the dealer touch either of their vehicles. ;)

I was glad to see he still takes really good care when washing, made coating it a lot easier since I didn't have to do any paint correction.

Man I hope I'm in good enough shape to wash my own vehicles when I'm 70. Pretty cool to see the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. My 4 year old daughter insists on cleaning her bike "with some of daddy's special towels" before she rides it lol
