My car never needs to be waxed...

I know At Lindsay Acura where my brother bought his new TL. They put some kind of coating and said that he'll never need to wax his car.

I think he has owned the car for a year or almost, and it still beads just like my CG's M-Seal. :furious:

So I heard a new one today that nearly floored me. I was not prepared for this at all.

A potential client calls me up and says she has 2 cars she wants me to detail regularly for her. An X5 and an XK8.

So far so good, I ask her if she needs a full paint correction first to get things rolling. She says no.

No problem so far.

"So all you need is a wash and a wax, then bi weekly washes?" She says "No, my cars never need to be waxed, I bought this package at the dealership and they told me I never have to wax my car again"

Man, I didnt know what to say to that. I really didnt.

So anyone ever hear of this new "package" that dealerships are selling to poor unsuspecting consumers?

Jim

People forget to read the fine print. It never needs to be waxed again if you bring it in every 3 months for the sealent application. We did this at the dealership i worked at. But we at least sent out reminder letters. The thing is, if they take it in as scheduled, if anything happens to the paint the dealership will cover it. At least thats how it was where i worked. We didn't try to screw people that bad lol.

Mine came with my rustproof package. Theoretically, yes, *I* never have to wax the car again according to the dealer. However, the DuPont Teflon sealant only lasts 1 year (they never said more than that), and therefore I have to keep coming back to the dealer every year...along with them respraying my car for rustproofing. :)

In the 1950s the dealers sold Blue Coral that they say lasted 6 months, it lasted 2 months. They sold Porcelinize which they said will last 1 year , it lasted 3 maybe 4 months . They said that Luster Seal would last forever, it lasted 3 months. Point is dealers will always try to sell a paint protection package.

Ah my aunt's silver 'stang has this diamondcoat crap on it. I was never sure about that stuff, looks like my fears have been confirmed. Sad thing is the car is an '03 I think and had that stuff applied fairly early on, I can't even imagne what the finish is like now...

You should of told her, "yeah you're right, that stuff they use at the dealership is great" and hung up (assuming you already made an attempt to explain to her that its crap). Doing bi-weekly washes is not really profitable if you're a busy guy anyway.

Not to take this thread off topic but what are you talking about bi-weekly washes is not profitable? I don't know about you or others on here but thats where i make my easy money. I can make a few hundred bucks on my busy regular client wash days.

You know, this really pisses me off. My girl just bought a charger not too long ago and I told her not to get what they are going to try to sell to her. Well it was raining that day so I didn't work and I went with her. I sat there as they were trying to sell her the paint protection package and she looked at me and smiled. We didn't say anything and we just let the lady explain how "amazing" it was. I would love to go on the local news just to let everyone know that they are getting scammed. Of course I would have to do tons of research by applying every type of package the dealers are selling here and go from there but I wish I could do it. Hell, it would tell people that they are getting screwed and give me a bunch of publicity.....free publicity! What do you guys think? Do you think it would work informing the people this way, or do you think its a waste of time?

Well, it doesn't really seem to be a waste of time or money if someone is going back to the stealership every 6 months or so to have something reapplied. It would be kind of a pain in the ***, but not a rip-off. If they told them that it's a one-tim deal, that's a scam and should be shouted from the mountain tops.

:birthday: Happy Birthday to me!!!

Many of you guys claim to know every product out there. You have talked bad about the product I install and yes. I give a 5 year guaranty. The insurance company that insures my installs is rated A-Best because the product line I install and sell works. It last 20 to 50 times longer than any wax. Paint is a polymer, putting wax on it is like trying to mix oil and water. The correct polymer can bond with paint and I am glad I found it.

Well that's where they are banking on making the money. It's just like a rebate for a product you buy. They are banking on the fact that you forget to send in the rebate, so they still get the full price. The dealership is probably putting in fine print the fact you need to bring it back every quarter in hopes that you don't do it, and they just pocketed $800 for $50 worth of work. But they do have it in the fine print so that no one can say they are ripping people off with some rediculous service.

Yeah, I'm also getting tired of hearing dealers offering those. Friends of ours has that on about three of those cars and it has proven to be equally worthless. The SRT8 was supposed to get it and is swirled like crazy (that car is not my department though). They also have an SSR that has it and it got a LOT of benefit from a good coat of wax I applied not too long ago.

Yes, dealerships do offer that crap. I was offered that as well when I bought my car, which was kinda funny since I had strictly told them to not even wash my car when it arrives from Japan, since the only person detailing it would be me.

Unsuspecting customers fall for this trap all the time.

I was a mechanic at a car dealer that sold "polyglycoat". Same scam, "never wax your car again" but it did have to be brought in every year to be "refreshed".

They used to sell an awful lot of it, the salesmen got $150 for every package they sold so they made sure just about every car got the treatment for $900.

It was a 3 part kit to do the treatment, a Precleaner, a wax & some kind of sealant. The dealer cost on the kit was $15

What is next brochures for blinker fluid and muffler bearings right next to the ones for their paint protection systems. I guess there really is a sucker born every minute :D

Ridiculous...I remember when I bought the Mustang they offered a "teflon coating" that will "sheet off water, and make the car shine like glass". Total BS.

I work in an RV dealership, running their detail shop. The finance department has the same type of sale for RV's. Its called Resist-All by Cal Tex. Same situation as everyone's posted so far, except they will sell it on ANY unit we have on the lot. We just had to do one on an eight year old class c motor home and it was oxidized beyond belief. The sales department doesnt want to pay us to buff it out or clean it up enough for this Resist-All (which is just a podunk wax) to adhere to the siding. Ridiculous. And what they charge to have this done on an RV would make your skin crawl. And with car dealers, when the customer wants to warranty anything, they point them to the manufacturer of the stuff. They take no responsibility for the customer. Im adding a link to the Cal Tex site (hope thats allowed) so you can see first hand their claims. Enjoy!

lets all go in front of the dealership and be like "yes my car is old but shinny and didnt need that paint protection". "oh miss i see that you have swirls and scratches, guess that isnt coverd under their protection =)"

my dad was goign to get it on his new TL. i said no dad ill take care of it. the dealership was like 'sorrie but then we cant warrenty the paint as this product can'. so i go 'well it lasts 6 years correct....how do you know since this car is brand new??'

then they go 'well sir paint can be oxidized and such and its worth to pay for this treatment'. and i go 'if the car is well taken care of there is little chance of oxidation'. then the dealership does their "scratch" test which i didnt even want to see and i told them to shove it.

it just makes me irritated =)
