My Buddy Lost an Eye Yesterday

Ctowner---sorry to hear about your buddies' lab. My mom-in-law and another good friend just had to have their dogs put down. It's tough , even when they're not yours; you're around them so much that you get kind of attached.

carnut---Thanks for all your replies. By the way, I read where your two little travellers took a walking tour of the neighborhood recently. I was VERY relieved that you got them back. Although ,those that returned them seemed to have less than virtuous motives. Sorry you had to go through that.

I am sorry to hear about your pup...I had a west highland terrier that lost an eye a few years back. Honestly, I think it bugged us (feeling sorry for her) than it bugged her. She didn't seem to mind a bit. And like others have said, once the hair grows back it is not all that noticeable. For being a major thing to lose, I was surprised that it had such a small impct on the pup. I hope your results are similar.

We finally got the pathology back on Gus and it showed that it in fact was malignant Melanoma. BUT , we caught it so early and the tumor was so small that the pathologist didn't detect it during the first biopsy...they had to do a second.

The good news is that Gus is now a cancer survivor!

That's the best news that I've gotten all day! :D

GT,

How many different costumes did you have for that Westy? :D

The westies were not into it like the Labs. Our yellow lab was a guide dog flunk out and was used to wearing their cape/marking thing and thus does not mind the costumes.

6 months later and Gus is doing well.

He threw a scare into us last month when we thought

we saw cloudiness in his other eye. We had him

checked out and the vet said everything seems to

be alright....we'll monitor the situation and take him in

for another check-up in 3 months.

He's not just a dog, he's an adventure!

Could be worse , all things considered.

I'm just happy he's still around.

Glad that he's doing well! About the eye, my wife adopted a bunny back in November with almost the same problem as Gus, and you can barely tell where the incision is! I think Gus will be the same way!

This is Sassy the Bunny, the one with 1 eye, and you can see the side where the eye is missing! Barely notisable!

Glad everything went ok with Gus. He's a nice looking dog. We have a German Shepherd, so needless to say, I like big dogs. hehe ;)

Guys, I was revisiting this post out of nostalgia and thought I'd take a moment to again thank everyone who responded with such concern and kind wishes.

However, I'm sad to report that Gus had to be put down on August 22nd after a difficult

struggle with systemic Lymphoma...there was nothing we could do and he never had a chance.

We only had Gus for three and a half years, and with his loss can only take solace

in the belief that we gave an otherwise doomed creature a chance at a better, more comfortable life.

He was like my right arm: with me EVERYWHERE I went. I miss his presence and personality TERRIBLY.

He was my friend....

Wow, sorry to hear about your loss as I have three dogs myself and they are a big part of our family. It's amazing the emotional attachment we get to our animals and how much they mean to us. My condolences to you and your family and in time hopefully you can find another companion as that's how we found some peace when our dog was killed by a raccoon and now we have 3.

Sorry to hear about your loss, i know the feeling. Just remember you had him for all these yrs and Gus gave you so much love and friendship that you will take with you all your life and someday another little friend will come along.

Sorry for your loss as I know how hard it is to loose a pet. You gave him a better life and were a friend to him also. RIP Gus.

I was going to give you my good wishes for Gus's recovery then was shocked to see that he had to be put down. I just recently joined, so I didn't notice this was an older thread originally.

I'm sorry to hear about your loss, and like BigA3 said, you were there for him when he needed you and he knew that.
