Mustang vs. Camaro

... you didn't mention what the intended purpose of the car was. Seems most everyone seems to think it's for drag racing. If that is not the case, the '99-'04 Mustang GT are a great choice. (I had an '01 GT 'vert) They're comfortable, they look the part, and make all the right noises. No, it's not the quickest car by any means, but it's a great cruiser that gets about 17 mpg around town & 25-26 mpg on the highway.

My '86 GT 'vert was also a blast... more power & torque down low where you can use it. The 4.6 is a great engine, but you really have to wind it up to get into the usable power band. For normal driving tho, it's a great choice.

Well.....I've owned both of the cars you've mentioned, so I think I have a good perspective on them. I had a 2004 Mustang GT (same as 03) and a 2001 Firehawk (similar to camaro, almost identical to SS)

As far as "fun to drive", I think the Mustang was more fun to drive. You could basically drive it sideways everywhere - it was predictable, lively, and entertaining. It wasn't all that fast (fast enough though) but it sounded great.

In terms of outright speed and handling, it was hand down the GM. The firehawk was significantly faster and had significantly higher handling limits. On the track (road course), it was a much better car because of this. For the street, though, it was bulky feeling, the seats were oddly low-feeling, and it was much less predictable (more than likely because of the power). It also didnt sound as great as the mustang, more than likely because of the y-pipe configuration as opposed to the H pipe (or X pipe after I added it) configuration of the mustang.

The GM motor felt much more high-tech and snappy, and aside from the power, it also drove better (the mustang is very slow to come down from revs, and also has annoying whiny power steering/brakes like all fords do). Funny because the OHC motors are supposed to be better. The GM motor had torque and power EVERYWHERE.

I dont think you can go wrong with either. For daily driving, I would get a mustang - for modding/racing, I would get the Chevy. I am an amateur race driver so for me track performance is usually #1, so take that into account in my opinions.

I ended up selling both of them and getting an 07 vette, which gave me the GM power but matched with a more sophisticated chassis that is far better on the street than the camaro/trans am (better on the track too, but not WAY better as some would like you to believe).

Hope that helps.

You really should drive both. They drive very differently. Quality-wise, the Ford probably wins. Performance-wise, the Chevy. It's always that way.

I've had five 99-04 Mustangs. Would never buy a GM product, nor probably no domestic ever again.

One for example:

First of all, the body style you are looking for is 99-04. There were Cobra's in 99 and 01, mach 1's in 03 and 04 as well as the mighty 03-04 cobra.

When you say Camaro, do you mean camaro or trans am? Because the WS6 is my freaking dream car, but I really find camaros to be ugly.

The Mustang is going to be significantly cheaper to modify, aftermarket parts are as much as half the price of their F-Body equivalents. Both cars have ****** factory rear ends, both cars have ****** automatic transmissions, the Mustang's manual isn't any better, but the F-Body has the T-56 which is a great transmission. Honestly, both interiors are pretty cheap too. Tons of rattling plastic in either car. I think mustangs are a lot more comfortable though, you sit more upright in the mustang although it still feels sporty, in an F-body I feel like I am laying down. The LS1 is also far superior to the 2 valve 4.6

However, it's also halfway under the dash and extremely hard to work on, I've seen people get fed up and drop the engine just to change the spark plugs.

stock for stock the F-body is going to murder the mustang in strait line performance, but the mustang brakes better, and despite an inferior suspension design (4 link vs the F-Body's Torque Arm), handles much better. This is stock for stock though.

Mustang for looks and affordability to mod as you please.

Both are domestic cheap cars imo but at the same time great cars imo.
