Mustang Convertible Tops

I have a couple of questions that I hope my fellow Autopians can help me with. I'll give you a run down first of my situation.

I have a 2001 Mustang GT Convertible with a black top. I have yet to treat it, 'cuz I don't know what to use. I usually just rinse it off with water and once a month wash it with EO "Wet" car shampoo. I contacted Ford to see what type of top I have. Ford stated that my top is made out of "Parchment". Is that like a canvas-type material? And what do I use to clean it?

Thanks everyone in advance! :xyxthumbs

Crap, I can't find the link but DavidB has a nice article on this, I just sent it to someone yesterday as well.

1. To deep clean use Amazing Roll-Off

2. To maintain (easy clean) use Porsche Tequipment

3.) To protect, as Showroom has said, use 303 for fabric.

Wash once a month, I would re-apply the 303 once a month as well.

Sorry I can't give more details.

Find out for sure what Ford means by parchment. If it is canvas you can use RaggTop or 303 protectants. Amazing Rolloff really works well for me. It deep cleans and does not destroy the protectant. RaggTopp is recommend for most domestic canvas tops. I use it and the water repellancy is great ( the water beads like the bead on a Zaino'd car)

The important thing is to find out what material your top is made from.:)

I use Porsche brand products and have been extremely happy with them. Luckily, they do not come with Porsche prices.

I'm with Brad B. on this one. I use the Porsche cloth top shampoo as well, and it's great stuff.

I have used the 303 Fabric Guard in the past, but have had difficulty with application. I had to invent my own method of application in order to treat the top.

WOLFSTEINS RAGGTOPP

For Cleaning & Protecting

Fabric & Vinyl Tops!

Tested And Endorsed By

HAARTZ

The World's Leading Manufacturer of Convertible Topping Fabric

Arctic White have you tried the Wolfsteins Raggtopp fabric protectant. This is the product used by the maker of our canvas tops (HAARTZ). Application is extremely easy and is paint safe. As mention in my earlier post you will not believe the beading. The best point is that this the OEM replacement of the carvas protection.

Also replenishing of this protection is a yearly adventure. Once a month is a little over-kill. If the car is a 24/7 outdoors car washing the canvas top weekly will prevent stains and mildew.

Thanks everyone for the responses. I'll probably go with the 303

product. Does anyone know what a "Parchment" top is? I've

tried to search the Web on it, but I'm coming up with zilch.

Does anyone have an idea? :(

I have yet to try the RaggTopp products, but have heard positive reviews of them. I just recently treated the top on the Vette, so it won't need it again for a while, but I'm going to keep the RaggTopp products in mind for the next time.

In reagrd to "Parchment", I have only heard that referred to as an actual color of the top. In my experience, a convertible top is either cloth/canvas or vinyl.

What does the top actually feel like? You should be able to tell a cloth top from a vinyl top with ease. Can you post a photo? :)

My '98 Mustang has a vinyl top. I have used Amazing Roll Off and 303 products with good results.

Arctic White here is a little info from another forum www.chirpthird.com) which has a convertible section.

Convertable Top - Cleaning and Care of Fabric

Bulletin No.: 00-08-67-002

INFORMATION

Subject:
Cleaning and Care of Fabric Convertible Tops

Models:
2001 and Prior Chevrolet Camaro, Corvette
2001 and Prior Pontiac Firebird

To maintain and protect your fabric convertible top, it should be cleaned often. If when cleaning your convertible top you find it difficult to remove stubborn dirt or stains, a product called Haartz(R) Fabric Roof Cleaner or equivalent, is recommended.

After the convertible top is clean and dry, it is recommended that a protectant such as 303 High Tech Fabric Guard(R) or equivalent(RaggTopp), be applied to protect the convertible top from water and oil based stains and mildew formation.

Important : As always, follow the manufacturers cautions and directions when applying.

The products mentioned above may become available from GMSPO in the near future. In the meantime, they can be purchased in (USA) from the Corvette Museum by calling 1-800-538-3883.

Okay,

What am I doing wrong? I've edited my previous message three times to show the photo. I got the address off the old post

which is being displayed. But it comes up as "page not found."

What do I do to get it to show?:nixweiss

Yeah, unfortunately that photo is not coming up. A top with the texture of "rubber"....that is not a cloth/canvas top that's for sure. Sounds like you have a vinyl top.

Just looked @ a 98 mustang GT covt roof and it looks to be a rubber/viynl top, with a cloth look texture.

The owner has used Blue magic top cleaner, from the local auto parts store. I ahve not used this product, therefore I can not recommend anything.

The above info on Ragg Top cleaner sounds good or the 303 cleaner protectant.

Hope that helps.

Do not worry about clkeaning the top, just drive the stang with top down all the time.

For all of you who replied to my thread,

THANKS!!:xyxthumbs

I found out that the top is indeed vinyl. I contacted the Parts

Department of the dealership where I bought it. They were

definitely a bigger help than Ford Customer Service. So, I

will probably, most definitely, go with the 303 products.

Again, MANY THANKS!!:bow
