Multiple coats?

New to the forums, a recent new lurker now posting! hey guys!

Im planning to Klasse seal my car in about a month. Here was my planned process

Wash

Dry

PC 2.5 SSR

PC 1.0 SSR

PC Klasse AIO

PC Klasse Glaze (multiple coats)

PC P21S wax

PC for (porter cable applied, probably hand removed)

I also wanted to use p21 cleansing lotion (I'm not sure if it would be necessary, but thiniking should use right after AIO?)

anyway, i was going to do maybe 5 or so coats of klasse on the car. However, it says we should wait 12 hours between coats. Now this part confuses me. Do we apply, wait 12, then buff off, then apply and repeat? Or do we apply, buff off, then wait 12 hours, and repeat? The other thing that questions me is what about the dust that collects onto the car surface between these coats? Surely dust/dirt is the reason why we end up with swirls (for my black tsx...its seen swirls already...5 months in). How do i apply layers of seal, w/o having to wash my car all over again? That confuses me, any insights?

I've recently started on my '01 Sable Black Eldorado with virtually the exact same process you describe, except for the SSR 1.0.

I Washed, Alcohol cleaned, (1:10 mix), Clayed, Alcohol'ed again, then hit the hood with the 'boys SSR-2. After a couple of re-do'es over swirling and light scratches, I hit it with AIO, buffed it off, then applied a shadow-thin coat of SG. I generally buff off the SG about 30 seconds after I apply it. I don't think you want to wait 12 hours before you buff off with SG.

You can save yourself a step by cutting out the SSR1, AIO should cover you instead. You do not need the P21 CL either.

Sounds like a plan except for two things. I would definitely not use hte P21S Cleansing Lotion after AIO because A: it may cause bonding issues between the AIO and the SG and B: you won't need it at all.

Edit to add that I agree with the points above that you may also not need the extra PB's SSR 1 polishing step.

I would apply SG by hand instead of PC. I found it too dificult to do this by PC with ultra thin coats plus you end up wasting product.

Do some searching here. There are threads where people recommend the wipe on, wipe off method for SG and some that talk about different spacing for layering the SG. (Some wait to different degrees and some may not wait at all). I'm sorry, I can't recall specifics. I have applied multiple layers but all on different days and after applying a layer, I usually wait about an hour or two. I have encountered difficulty buffing off and I may try the wipe on, wipe off method the next time I use it.

Also realize that you need to know you are finished layering the SG before you top with

the P21S.

Good luck and post pics if you can!

i've read that you can layer sg, basically i want a good number of coats so i can get some more protection for the paint. damn swirls!!

the directions say to let cure for 12 hours before applying next coat....this part confuses me. I've read to wait and also read about the wipe on wipe off method....just confused on what to do persay.

Try doing a search about the SG. I read a post about a week or two ago where someone mentioned layering SG and on the third coat was amazed. Sorry I can't find the link.

The 12 hours is for proper bonding but there probrably would not be an issue with WOWO (wipe on wipe off) especially if this is something you will do reguarly. I guess it depends on your time restrictions and ability to keep the vehicle out of the elements.

Compressed air would be the safest way to remove dust.

A QD in between layers will get the dust off but I don't know if it will effect durability.

A tack rag would work also.

P21S wax can be layered one after the other.

Good luck post pics.

In addition to Acn's questions, would applying multiple coats mess up the paint in terms of the coats being abrasive to.... the coat you just put on before?

SG contains no cleaners/abrasives's what so ever. You can put on as many coat's as you like. I would wait at least 24 hours in-between coat's though, even longer would be preferred in my book, I'm in no hurry, LOL

i'd want to do that, just wondering how you would avoid accumulating dust. this is what im thinking

put SG all over car, let it sit for the night or the next day

however, even in my garage, dust accumulates (thats it, im cleaning it and flooring it this summer..)

Dust will probably stick to the car surface also..especially with some SG drying over it

How do i get rid of the dust problem? Like someone said, maybe a QD would help? or even QEW? But 2 reasons, a. worried i'm gonna scratch it up again....stupid swirls. and b. im worried be counter intuitive...possibly wipping away some of the SG?

After that i assume i'd just go for another layer or two, I think i'll do 2 every day for the weekend, and wax it sunday for monday morning. that should do the trick.

I would not let SG stay on overnight. Before you put on another layer either wash or QD or both. QEW or Optimum's NRWS would do the trick as well.

I kept SG on overnight in my garage. I was also worried about dust, so I put a clean sheet over the horizontal surfaces. The next day SG came off very easy. waited a few days then washed car again and followed previous step.

According to the interview from the guy who actually created klasse...he says to apply and let it sit at least 12 hours, more if u want it to come of easier. I think i'm gonna give that a try, but instead of just leaving it in the garage, im thinking about putting some plastic sheets over it, the huge ones that i can probably find from painting supply stores. You guys think that might work? My goal is at least 3 layers. Looking to do 5.

Again I left SG on over night and it was easy to remove. Be carefull with the plastic drop cloths, they do not breath and may prohibit the SG from drying properly. I parked in the garage with freshly cleaned cotton bed sheets over my hood, top and trunk and rigged them to leave a 1" space between the sheets and car to let air flow. The car was clean the next day with no visable dust on the car. SG came of like a charm, I then waited a few day then washed the car and added another coat. waited a few more days then washed car again and added pinnacle souv wax.

What I have found is that 9 outta 10 swirls are caused by someone using a less than optimum towel. Dust can't really harm your paint when you wipe it off unless you wip[ it off with sandpaper or something. :chuckle:

As far as the Klasse goes, I usually put 4 coats on my ride. I have found that any more than 4 or 5 coats is a waste of product. I wait 24 hours in between and let the Klasse sit on my paint for at least 15 minutes before wiping it off. Usually I'll wait about 30 minutes.

Once something has cured, it can't get any dryer.
