Motorcycle Gear

I have been having some second thoughts about textile jackets after trying these on. While the armor seems top notch, I am just not sure how a textile jacket will hold up in the event I take a slide. I keep thinking of the old say "you either sweat or you bleed". I know what you are thinking, ohh there he goes changing his mind again :D Well, trying on lots of different jackets really was an experience. There are just so many different types it is boggling trying to compare everything out there. I was impressed with the fit of the Alpinestars jackets I tried on, both leather and textile.

I have been considering either the Alpinestars Stunt jacket which is availabe in a fully vented (perforated) version in White/Red/Black.

Or possibly the Alpinestars Stage jacket which has cordura stretch panels in the arms and is also vented (perforated) in the shoulders. I will have to see if my dealer also has these jackets in stock.

I will post Tuesday with what I wind up with :D Thanks to everyone who offered advice, it was much appreciated!

I like the stage jacket more, but that's just me.

I can understand the whole thing you are going through, because I spent days looking for my jacket. I did the same thing when I was deciding if I should get a one piece suit or a pair of pants for a jacket.

Keep on looking if you ar enot satisfied with the choice, because motorcycle gear is alot of money and your skin can depend on it. Also it has to be comfortable.

ood luck an dkeep us updated.

Well guys I finally ordered the jacket and a pair of gloves.

I had finally decided on the Alpinestars Stage jacket but, they told me they wouldn't be able to get one until December so I went with the Alpinestars Stunt Jacket. It is the fully vented (perforated) Red/Black/White.

I am still considering the options on riding pants. I have always just worn jeans but, with the amount of riding I am going to be doing I want to look at something with more protection. I have considered Draggin Jeans and then at the other end of the spectrum a pair of Alpinestars Bat pants.

My girlfirend bought a pair of alpinestars bat pants and they fit fine on her. She got a size 50 EU, which is a 34 US i believe. Since tha is my size i tried them on. The pants ar enice and all but on the back of my knees they were way too tight. I couldn't move my legs at all. Make sure to try them on before you buy them AND get on a motorcycle when you have them on. This is very important , because they will fit you fine if you are standing, but as soon as you get in the riding position there might be problems.

Also, bear in mind that leather stretches some, so they might get comfortable.

StoicDude,

Do you recall if the zipper (to attach to a jacket) on the Bat pants is full circumference or just the typical 8" zipper??

I may have to hunt around to find a shop that carries the Bat pants but, definitely I would like to try them on before buying.

Thanks for the input, much appreciated!

The zipper is not 8" it is much longer. It is about 27" long, so it would be a 3/4 zip. If you are looking to do trackdays, it will be fine.

The zipper is not full circumference, because you have about 3" on each side of you crotch (center zip).

Let me know if you need any other help.

Your right, it does not go all the way around, but close. I called it full circumference because that is how I have always heard others refer to it. I do like the fact though that it goes most of the way around for a much more secure connection. Next best thing to a 1 piece suit.

Here is the review of the pants that got and the A* Bat pants.

Dainese Dragonfly Pants

Color: Black/ Red

Size: 52

Price: Retail $600

Looks:

For me, this was the model to go with. It had red and black and it was more aggressive than the other model P.103. The 103 looked like a regular, any other brand of pants, the Dragonfly, was better in my opinion.

Two red stripes on the side and Dainese shadow inscribed on them, plus the logo on both knees. Also, the Dragonfly has the knee protector secured in a zippered pocket, where the P.103 has a Velcro patch. The zipper looks much neater and contributes to the “one piece “ or fluid motion of the pants. Some people might think that this is crazy, but when you are spending 600 bucks on pants, I want everything to my liking.

Quality:

Very sturdy, but the leather has been a bit sloppily stitched and cut in a couple of places. The pictures will show what I mean. These things are no big deal, but when the pants are so expensive, **** better be right.

Fit and Comfort:

These pants fit me way better than the A* Bat pants in size 50. The A* feel more snug when I am standing up, and as soon as I get into a riding position, I was not able to move my feet back and forth, because it would cut on the back of my knees. These pants are a bit bigger . I opted for the bigger size (52), because I did not want to run into the same problem that I had in size 50 with A*. These are EU sizes btw. When standing up, there is a lot of room in the area of my butt, but when I get into the riding position, it disappears and conform to my body. I have very long, skinny legs, so there is some room around my thighs as well. Here again, I thought it would be better, because I want to gain some weight anyhow. The pants are fully lined with a mesh lining and have a double zipper on the back, not on the side like most pants.

The two zippers are made for the Dainese in/ out boot wear deal. One zipper is a standard zipper, the other a zipper which reveals a leather joint section, basically expands the bottom of the pants so the boots can be worn inside.

There are also two pockets on each side.

The pants have belt loops as well, and for me this is convenient, because the pants are a bit big, so I will be wearing a belt with them.

The waist closure system is a button, not Velcro.

A ¾ zipper can be zipped together with Dainese jackets.

There is NO ventilation on these pants. Well, actually the most ventilated part is the back of the knee, which is a patch of D-stone material.

Construction and Protection:

The pants feel extremely sturdy. The lather is nice and thick and is double or triple reinforced (overlapped that is) in critical areas, such as the knee, butt and hips.

The hips have soft armor padding (foam) inside.

The butt area has two layers of leather or some type of foam in it. It is thicker than the rest of the pants.

The knees and shin are protected by CE plastic armor. The shin one is not removable, but the knee one is. There is also an extra patch of leather over the knee area. The sliders are the new “alien model and are very thick and hard as well.

Conclusion:

I was debating between getting a 1 piece suit or sticking with my leather jacket that I love and getting pants. I got the pants an am very happy, although these pants are very pricey.

Side note: Comparing the A* Bat pants to Dainese Dragonfly Pants.

First of all, it is not a fair comparison for a performance standard (Dragonfly= sport/ track riding, Bat=casual/sport riding), but I can compare some things, such as quality and a couple of other features that I have noticed.

A* are very good quality, but a bit lighter and not as stiff as the Dragonflys.

The back part of the pants on the A* is better in my opinion, because it extends a bit further than the Dragonfly. This could be important in a crash, if sliding on the back, or if the jacket rolls up.

The main thing that I noticed and that bothered me on the A* was the stretch panel above the knee. It did not even stretch when I would go into the riding position. I think that it was a bit high for proper placement. The Dragonfly’s stretch panel on the other hand was in perfect place and you could see it stretch as soon as you get into the riding position.

Man these reviews are long, but I hope they help somebody.
