Motion to add a 'spell-check' feature

If at all possible, could the administrator(s) and moderator(s) add a spell-check feature?


Some of the posts I've seen lately are borderline incomprehensible. I think it would only make for a more quality experience here at DC. :)
 
Sorry, but this is a real hot-button for me, as I see it not only here on the forums, but also in everyday business. It seems that our educational system no longer considers correct spelling and grammar of importance.

Sadly, spell-checkers are blind to the meaning of what you are trying to convey. They will only confirm that there is a word with the spelling that is typed. People have become so dependent upon these "spell-checkers", that they have lost the eye to read their posts before submitting them to be sure that they're conveying their message clearly. :(

Yes, I would have to agree. I am looking for an automated spell checker that does the job without being overly annoying.

We do need to set a higher standard for spelling and grammar. Our words are the lifeblood of Detail City and they should be spelled correctly as much as possible to allow threads and posts to be read easily. This would also help to increase our search engine ranking.

In the mean time here is a link to a great spell checker for Internet Explorer. It spell checks anything you enter on the internet. Works great and I have been using it for over a year now. http://www.iespell.com/

You could also use the Google Tool Bars for IE or Firefox. I have both of these and they also have a spell check that works well on anything you enter on the internet. In fact I spell checked this post with the Google Tool Bar for Firefox.
 
Very much agreed. Now will people take the time to use it though?? It is really needed for a few people, IMO. I think this little bit should or potentially make DC very inviting to many new people. I agree if you read a post and can't even read it, people will think that this site is bad, and not come back.

This is the one that I'm using and it works great.

Unfortunately for me I was not that strong in school with spelling and grammar, or didn't seem to care. Any help that I can find is always welcomed

One other thing to remember is this is the "world wide web" some here are typing in a second if not third language

Good point. Also they use internet speak. Millions of short form or abbreviations and little tweaks that are done to decrease the amount of typing that needs to be done. Most spell checkers don't recognize these and need to be set up to accept the acronyms and things.
 
I can see the very valid point Norah makes and I agree with it. There is no substitute for enhancing communication skills as much as possible.

However, for whatever reason, language, grammar,spelling, and typing(-->guilty as charged,2 finger typist here :( ) isn't always an individual's greatest strength. Therefore, a spell checking tool always has its place. I would say simply downloading the IE or Firefox spell checker is the easiest solution. One will be able to use it for all online purposes, including all the forums, e-mail, chat, etc.
 
Maybe a point could be made this this is a mature forum, and that AOLspeak (and the like) doesn't pass the test. If people don't get the hint, maybe make their posts invisible or something. Honestly, how long does it take to use the punctuation and shift buttons?

Norahcrv - Greetings! Haven't seen you around much lately...:howdy

I agree with you regarding lack of good grammar and spelling and the pathetic state of (many) educational systems here in the States. Unfortunately, if we are to have any hope not to have everything misspelled we should welcome spell-checkers and grammar checkers integrated in each and every electronic writing tool we use. Maybe then people will learn some spelling and grammar from the suggestions these features will present. Otherwise, I'm afraid, its just ain't gonna get no beter but jest gona get a lot worser.
 
Waht is worng with usnig my brian to do my splleing for me+ Seriously though, there was a study done about spelling by a university but I lost the info. They found out that as long as the first and last letters in a word were in their correct place the other letters could be mixed up and people would still be able to read it. I know spelling is important but I guess when it's online some people don't see the need to do the extra step.
 
There is already a spell check feature on here. All you have to do is download the program and check away.

In case no one knows what I'm referring to, the spell check is the on with the ABC and a check mark underneath it in the upper right hand corner of the quick reply text box.

The real problem is getting people to use it. I'm not sure that most people care. I happen to be one that does care about spelling quite a bit. In fact, if I'm bored, I'll go through posts and correct spelling and grammar just to pass some time.

I don't see it.
 
It's also in the full version of the reply or new post. You may have to change your settings under User CP> Options before you can see it.

I agree with Norah that there is no substitute for an individual to take a few moments and look over what they are about to post. Not only for spelling errors, but content as well.

By the way english wasn't my strong point in school either.
