Mothers Clay says only use Lube.

On the box it says only use their lube but I always just use soap and water. You dont think I am hurting anything do you?

Yep. You're hurting the sales figures for Mother's clay lubricant. :)

I've read that using other than clay lubricant (i.e. car wash shampoo & water, QD spray, etc) can shorten the life of the bar. Personally, I haven't found this to be an issue - I use a combination of rinse water on the car, and generally Poorboys S&W. This may be because I think of clay bars as being fairly disposable. I cut 'em in half and maybe see two or three applications out of each section.

Thanks, I figure it was just because they wanted you to buy a ton of their QW but I just wanted to make sure it was not hurting anything.

^ How would it hurt Mothers? They give you lube in their kit and the 16oz bottle is MORE than enough for 2 clayings... exactly what the bar itself gives you.

I tried some pinnacle clay this last weekend. It started to crumble 1/3rd of the way through the car! using their lube. THen it became a sticky mess. so i tried water and then soap and water. In both cases it became an near solid lump. I've had similar results when using megs clay. Despite people saying they use water, or soap and water, I am finding better performance using a qd or lube. I tried spray and whipe for aobut 20 min, just to finish off the car and it worked very well, But 20 min does not a great test make.

I just mix a capfull of optimum no rinse into a spray bottle filled with water and I've yet to have any problems. With both sonus clay and the mothers clay, it's always been still going strong after finishing my car.

no need to waste good qd spray using it for clay lube. :xyxthumbs

As afro said, he uses Opt rinseless, I use the DP 4-1 rinseless with tons of water in a bottle and it seems to be getting the job done just fine.
