Most commonly encountered detailing misinformation??

My encounter at Big Lots!

Me: *Picks up gallon of Zymol wash for $2.99*

Old guy: If you really want a good wash, you should get the Turtle Zip Wax, it's a green color. Best wash I've ever used, I highly recommend it.

Me: Oh ok, thanks. Maybe I'll check it out next time.

Old guy: *looks at me with a weird look as if I'm crazy*

Me: *Proceeds to walk to checkout with Zymol wash in hand*

My all time favorite is when people post pics of brand new vehicles and show the new paint as evidence of a great detail .... rating products as being great on basically pristine paint :)

The misconception that new paint (factory or aftermarket) will not have a noticeable improvement in appearance from a thorough detail. Second misconception is that a product cannot be adequately reviewed on new(er) paint.

Meguiar's Deep Crystal 3-step system is all you EVER need to keep a vehicle detailed, and it's the best thing on the market.

:doh

It's not and this is what I will be trying to get across to people in my dad's WRX club.

They've got a care care info night at a local detail shop which is probably one of the best we have in SA but they push meguiars products like they are gold and everything else is crud

I know a guy who uses 3 step system every 3 months

His car looks real shiny with not much swirls but there's no real depth or wetness to it. He's running out of paint

He does clay it regularly though

Misconceptions or plain untrue statements....here goes

Paint Protection will last for the cars lifetime

Paint Protection will stop bird droppings

" We treated your car with paint protection"

or

One day Scottwax will post a picture of a car and we will see a swirl in it !

Darn, I knew someone would call me on this one.... all I meant is that I would love to see more details of older cars that show more drastic improvements of old paint to show the effectiveness of product(s)

At least old panels, it is more demonstrative IMO

The comments that most often slay me regard to drying the car:

"I don't need a microfiber, I have a chamois which everyone know is great for paint. I have a special kind with the right amount of oils-it's imported."

Yeah and thanks for pulling the wax off the car for me. :)

or "I like to use a good Terry towel, cheap and effective."

Yep, effective at swirls and micromarring. :)

Keep them coming people. Awesome resource so far :xyxthumbs

today i go to k-mart and i see three college students (one guy / two girls) and they are looking at the automotive section as well as i. one of the girls goes.... (because the guy was looking for soap) this works really good (referring to armor all gel) and continue to rant and rave about it. not once did any of them even look at any of the megs products (probably the best products on the shelf). finally.... the guy picks up (most noticably because of the price) the blue coral soap and they go on their way. the misconception of easy/shortcut steps in washing a car/cheap soaps, intrigues me to the average consumer who doesn't have alot of knowledge of car care. it's sad to see people who buy new cars and then give it less then it deserves. after all.... a car is the second biggest investment one will ever make. :nixweiss

Amazing isn't it. They buy a car worth tens to hundreds of thousands of dollars and wash it with any car shampoo from the local shops, a sponge and 1 bucket then dry with a chamois

And when they think it looks so hot, some cheap nasty wax is put onto paint that's probably oxidising or totally faded and has bird dropping crazing which won't come out

We've all been on the dark side but I certainly wasn't as bad as that.

At least I did use a four step meguiars mirror glaze process when necessary

The first time I clayed my FC's wheels I almost puked! They were absolutely gross even though they looked mighty clean. The machined/cleared lip and painted/cleared spokes now look nearly brand new after years of neglect when I THOUGHT I took care of them.

I didnt know you could clay your wheels???? Is it the same process as claying the paint???

Yet another task for the next detail!:xyxthumbs

That there is some mystical corelation between the price and the qualities of certain waxes, the more you pay the better the product, the better it is.... So there are $1500.00 waxes out there, but hey, its a great container and you get lifetime fillups !

We all know the basic qualities of a detail are established in the prep stage.

People who sell the stuff know more than the detailers who use it...

That's not always the case. I've gotten a lot more meaningful information from those who use the products than those who sell them.

Here's one; That the company that markets a product under a brand name is the manufacturer of the item...... ! ! !

Here is MY favorite; That there is a product which is the ultimate polish, sealant, LSP out there waiting to be discovered by us... LOL ! We just keep searching, dont we ?:xyxthumbs :xyxthumbs

Nice thing is, It (products) just keeps getting better and better ! Waiting for the Z8 spray sealant to come out....

A paint film surface isnâ€â„¢t a delicate thin coating, easily dulled and very easily scratched. So there is no need to choose carefully the advice you listen to and more importantly any advice you act upon.
