Monday's Detail: 1989 Ferrari 328 GTS

Well after school started, detailing for me has slowed down and time has become precious. Last Monday I was blessed with the opportunity to detail a 1989 Ferrari 328 GTS. The owner bought the car about a month ago and it has about 29,XXX miles on it. When the car was brought to my house I knew I had the work cut out for me, since the paint is all original I know has to be very thin which Ferrari paint naturally is. The owner drove about an hour away to get the car to me and left it overnight in my garage so I could finish it in the morning. When the car was brought to me there were some swirls but not the amount I expected. The car has single stage paint so I washing pads every panel or so. Overall the car is in excellent shape, but I knew I would have to spend a lot of time taking care of it and not going too aggressive with it.

I can’t believe it, but my camera separates files into separate folders each day. So all the before pics were in a Monday folder and the after pics were in a Tuesday folder. Well I didn’t realize this when I downloaded the pics from the camera on Tuesday and only ended up with the after pics and no before when I cleared the memory card!!! None the less here was the process…

Paint:

Wash – Swissol Car Bath (owner supplied)

Clay – Zaino Clay with FK425 as lube.

Menzerna Final Polish II via Rotary @ 1500 rpms and polish pad

Menzerna Final Polish II via Rotary @ 1000 rpms and polish pad

Some tighter spots I used 4 inch polish pads via drill adapter

Clearkote Red Machine Glaze via PC @ 4

Swissol Scuderia Wax by hand x 2 (one Monday evening and one Tuesday morning.)

Wheels:

Meg’s wheel brightener 50/50 with mf mitt and megs wheel brush for the inside wheels. Hand polished with Flitz Polish and sealed with collinite IW845. Tires got Zaino Z16 and wheel wells got AA.

Interior:

Vacuum, woolite/water on everything, leather got Zaino Z10 and all vinyl treated with 303. All glass cleaned with stoners IG

Overall the entire detail took 12 hours over the course of all day Monday and Tuesday morning. The owner was very pleased!

Here’s the after pics:

Wow! That car looks great. Very nice work!!

Does the owner happen to have a mustache and wear a Detroit Tigers hat?

I hate you guys. I would love to see a Ferrari like that, let alone get to detail one. That car looks amazing. Definately a great job.

Thanks for the compliments everyone. He took it to a show today and is taking it to a show next week, hopefully he will take some pics so I can share them with everyone!

That my friend, it some wet paint!

Like Scott said, swimming pool wet!

Just a clean job.

Thanks for posting it.

Your work is top notch, looks amazing. I dream of detailing a Ferrari. A question regarding Rotary use, how many rpm's on the edges and are you keeping the pad flat?

I use a 6.5 inch pad and never run over the edges! The "edges" have the least amount of paint on them and will burn right off if gone over wrong. I keep the pad flat then around edges or areas im worried about i tilt the pad slightly or keep the pad flat and angled to make sure I dont go directly over the edges (if that makes any sense) The previous details that car had recieved from the previous detailers striped the paint off in several areas of where the paint had shaper angles.

What do you do with swirls that go out to the edge of a panel?

If anything, use a PC with low speed (2-3). With my expiernce with the rotary I use it around 900 rpms and VERY low pressure. I havent burnt paint with my methods! (KNOCK ON WOOD)

I've never had any problems with the PC and speed 5 or 6 on edges, but I reduce the pressure. So you use the rotary at 900 rpms on edges with no problems or am I misunderstanding?

Looks amazing, any thoughts on Swissol Scuderia?

It was my first time using the wax...owner supplied it. For some reason, dont know if it was the particular jar he had or nature of the wax, it was kinda of gritty straight out of the jar. The directions didnt make mention of using your hand warmth to warm the wax but I held the wax under the hologen light setup and let it warm up. i used a meg's foam applicator to apply. THe wax went on after warming VERY easy. I applied to one panel then moved on to the next panel, and after application of the second panel I wiped off the first. Did this around the enitre car. The wax removed VERY EASY as easy or even more easy as Pinnacle Souveran. Intially the wax has a very clear wet look. Maybe not as wet as Souveran but more deep and clear. I was very pleased with the wax. I am considering Swissol's Concorso as one of my next high end waxes. The deep clarity of the wax is what blew me away. Souveran is wet, but the Swissol just had the deep clear look the made the red jump out at me. The second coat made the wetness rival souveran with one coat. Definetly a wax to consider. I believe the retail price is $120usd for the swissol wax. This particular wax is specifically for Ferrari paint according to swissol.

Great job on the Ferrari.Glad you like the Scuderia, the wax is kind of gritty/bitty due to a low -medium oil content, and approx 40% yellow carnauba, much less oil/more wax when compared to souveran.FWIW,the Swissol best of show(concourso),is also fairly bitty, again due to a higher content of wax over oil (51% per 6oz),but works very well by hand, and can be left to stand for as long as you like.
