MMMMM Metabo rotary

MGM- I LOVE THIS MACHINE!! man it is so nice to be able to finesse the finish passes without having to try and "lift" the machine to lighten the load. I am getting outstanding results even on black vehicles finishing with a LC blue pad and Menzerna FPII.

I have found myself using a little pressure for the first two passes with a cutting pad and then letting the weight of the machine be all the pressure and that has been working out great for me.



when finishing the weight of the machine is all I use too. The thing is so nice I can barely hold onto the end by the cord and my other hand on the handle and it just glides.

I think this has been the best purchase I have made so far.

I hate detailing trucks especially 15 mile long ones Black of course with bed toppers painted black top match and enough chrome frigin trim to make 13 harleys out of it....ok end rant I am bitter about a truck I did not too long ago. :D

For folks considering DeWalt or Makita, I don't see why NOT to spend the $30-$60 more on a machine you'll love... (I'm still waiting for mine from AllPro, maybe tomorrow!). That's like 1.5-2.0 hours worth of paid detailing and the time saved over PC leads me to think this will pay for itself with just a few paid details.



What kind of pads and polish are you using for restoration/swirl removal, scott? I pickedup some optimum polish and a LC durastrand pad to start (in addition to the foam pads for the PC). The 6" flexible velcro backing plate seems a little big, though...



Can't wait to test it out on some other cars.



As far as holding it, I removed the handle from the PC a while ago and prefer it that way - the machine vibrates a lot less, too... So using the metabo should be an easy transition from that point of view... Thanks again for the recommendation!

BTW, The metabo PE12-175 is only 5.6 lbs VS. the Makita 9227 at 6.6 lbs.



Both are great machines though!

Soooo, can I use my existing backplate from my PC with this Metabo ?

Its a 5 inch back plate I got with my Sonus DAP kit

Also, it sounds like I can safely transition from a PC to a Rotary as long as I keep my rotary speed down, as opposed to what most newbies do which is crank it up, and keep the polisher moving, not static in one spot.

Does this sound correct ?



Is the Rotary primarily used to cut down your time spent on the vehicle, or is used ONLY on severe vehicles that if they visit you again you would not necessarily use it because the finish is in pretty good shape now ?

no the thread size on most rotories is 5/8-11 which is a lot bigger than the PC. PLus Rotories mostly utilize a female backing plate (hole in the backing plate) vs the male threads on the PC backing pads. they are jsut opposite from eachother.

The rotory does cut down time for leveling the paint for sure! Some vehicles need to be finished with the cyclo or PC (at least with MY skill level).



My advice is get a body panel from a body shop (they will be happy to give you them) and practice on that first before a real car. Try to burn the paint, try to make holograms appear and disappear (hehe takes some practice ;)) generally get a feel of the machine to build confidence. If you are scared when you begin on a car your chances are higher of you making a bad decision.
