MiniDV to PC via USB?

JaredPointer

COME AT ME BRO
Any of you techies know about grabbing the videos from a MiniDV recorder (Canon ELURA65) and putting them on my PC (probably eventually to a DVD)?

Been doing some reading up on it, however I am not familiar with the process and was hoping maybe some of you fellows may have done this.

Does your computer have firewire (IEEE-1394) capability? That is typically the connectivity bus that would be used to connect a MiniDV cam to a PC, not USB.

Why not put the disc from the camcorder into your computer and transfer them that way?

Apparently you need to do something called "finalizing the dvd" in the camcorder to get it to play on the pc first.

***I'm not a techie, nor do I play one on TV. Just a thought I had which seemed to me that may work.

The miniDV is a digital cassette tape. That appears to be my issue - the camera is just old enough not to have the ability to transfer via USB 2.0. Apparently some newer dams can do that.

Yeah, the newer cams mostly just use memory cards like digital still cameras, making PC transfer really simple.

You should be able to pick up and install a Firewire card in your PC pretty cheap, though. For example:

Newegg.com - SYBA IEEE 1394a FireWire PCI Card with Internal 9-pin Header Model SD-VIA-FW1E1H

We bought a Sony cam this time around that records to an SD card. That's nice. :)

Looks like I'll either have to go the route of buying a card like that and a firewire cable or just paying someone to do the tape-to-DVD thing.
