Midnight Sun - How many cars ?

my dad recently bought a cheapy orbital buffer by ryobi... needless to say, i've learned my lesson and though i maybe overdoing it, i am going to be detailing by hand in the times to come. however, as a result of my ignorance, i went ahead and used the buffer and now there are 'burn marks' on the car. or that's what i think they are called. i have seen them before on some cars. and im pretty sure they are burn marks as a result of improper use of a buffer (or bad one, probably both in my case). picture included, look at the top ridge of the trunk area, those horizontal marks. they are only visible in direct sunlight and on the sides of the car (where they look worse) they are not horizontal like that (i suppose as a result of the different curvature of the side panels of the car) they are more rounded but have the same texture and reflectiveness. how can i get these out? i already took off the wax i put on when i used the buffer and repolished and rewaxed by hand, but they are there, and show no signs of going away after repeated washings (not that i thought they would just disappear, but it was worth hoping for). anyone have any answers?

anaqron, welcome to the forum.

What product(s) did you use with your buffer?

Did you use something that would reduce swirl marks?

Recall that paint prep is the key, and the swirl marks need to be at least minimized before waxing.

Nice pic otherwise, but where's the picture of your hood. All I see is a pic of some guy taking a picture, haha :) I love these self portraits, we should put all of them in a sort of a "yearbook". Maybe someone will take thier next pic with the camera in front of them rather than covering their heads, (better yet, take a pic of a reflection of one's girlfriend instead). Then we can sell the collection on an auction site :D.

as long as the damage isn't too severe. From the pictures it appears it isn't all that bad.

Do a search on this site for "swirls" and you will find a boat-load of information.

I'm not the one to tell you exactly what to do, there are more experienced folks here than I. But relax, it can be fixed for not very much $$$.

Can't get buffer burns from an orbital , they don't create much heat .

Try a good swirl remover like 3M's Perfect-swirl remover or Finesse it2. Apply it with foam applicators using back and forth motions.

I think the one he's talking about is just a buffer - it just spins.

The marring you see is 99% most likely superficial, and can be fixed with fine cut rubbing compound or even SMR. Always go least to most aggressive, and you will be fine. Please reseach the archives for great info.

ic ic, i didn't know they were just swirl marks at heart. i will do a search to see what is advised to do here. as well, whats SMR?

and also, yes, it's an orbital buffer... only bought it like two months ago

I don't think you burned it, looks like you just made more swirl marks.

Use 3M SMR and look at some of the old post on buffer operation and you'll be perfectley fine.

From my limited experience... those aren't true burn marks and just follow the advice of the others in this thread to get them out.

I had true burn marks on my 1965 Mustang when I had it detailed years ago (before it was repainted) They were truly "burns" the paint was GONE in the center of these little crescent shaped scars, and the paint was a darker "burned" color around the edges. I must have had 30 of them around the car.... I was so pissed, but never took any legal action.

Good luck and don't worry.... they will come out!

Did you, by chance, use the terry cloth bonnet that came with the machine?

Consumer products will often harden on the bonnet during use and mar the paint. If you decide to use the machine again (and there's really no reason not to), purchase some foam bonnets for it instead.

At most auto parts retailers, they have 2 - a thin one (yellow) and a thick one (blue) both made by Nicsand. Go with the blue. They generate less heat than the terry cloth ones and can prevent the marring you've experienced.

ok... yea, i did use a terry cloth pad that came with the buffer... bad i guess... and then i used a soft hair pad thing to buff it off (came with the machine as well, don't know what to call it). if i gain enough confidence in the future to use it again, i will. maybe i'll let my dad test it on his car with the foam pads just to make sure =P.

and yea, i don't see any metal, paint is still there, there are just big hideous hazy cresent shaped clusters of scratches.

and i did a search now, so you guys don't think i should use finesse it 2 and then go to the SMR? would that be too harsh? i was thinking since this seemed more serious than just random swirl marks that i'd use the finesse it 2 and the smr to clear up the haziness that is said occurs when you use finesse it 2.

Are you thinking about trying out one of the Zaino or Klasse combos? (was that unintrusive enough guys? :) ) It might offer you more protection and better performance. A guy reported spending all day with the 3 step only to have the protection wear off in two weeks (don't know what he did though)

we will (should) be chatting tonight if you car to join us too :)

Its most likely the bad bonnet and towel. Try some nice high quality towels and try to do it by hand. If you need a step up try 3M Perfect It II Fine Cut Rubbing Compound.

A Porter Cable Dual Action polisher works well, and it is a real key in my car care routine.

See you at the chat, if I am still up, been up for close to 17 hours already, and by 10:30, it will be 21 hours......

i like learning, lucky me. and yes, after i bought the meguiare's, i learned from a member of the i-club (subaru impreza rs club, www.i-club.com ) that zaino would do me better and that meguiare's is just average. now, i am a high school senior, so i don't have the funds for the whole setup from zaino, (all the dang z's) but when i can get some cash, i will be going to try zaino, though i should go to zaino after the 3m products or do they have something comparable to the SMR and perfect it? i will try to drop in on the chat, just took a nap and have homework to do, but as long as i remember, i'll be there

I don't think Zaino has anything that removes swirls, I know Z5 9is that the one) can help fill them.

I'd try 3M Swirl Mark Remover (in this case, the one for dark paint, they make 2). It's product number 39009. if after a couple applications they're still there, try stepping up to 3M Perfect-It II Fine Cut Rubbing Compound (39002). I've used both of these with no hazing on dark paints, but your paint might be different. if it hazes, don't panic, just use a less agressive product (cleaner wax, etc) to remove the fine haze.

Blue Skies,

I have a jar of Blackfire Midnight Sun. Great stuff!

How many cars can be waxed from just one jar?

I've done 5 or six cars (two coats on most of them) and it barely looks like I have used any at all.

Before I bought it, I was a little put off by the price. But, when I consider how little product it takes to wax my cars, it is much cheaper than it initially appears.

Is there a shelf life and does it ever go bad?

Haha... I don't know if anyone has ever ordered a 2nd jar!!! Sounds like it really goes far! Great product...:hurray:

I don't think carnuba has a shelf life... Angelo would know for sure.
