Microfibers?

Hi Guys,

In the past (before I found this forum) I used Griot's exclusivley. Porter Cable, Griot's Wax, 100% cotton towels.

For the past 2 weeks I have used Sonus car wash, Sonus fine clay, Klasse AIO followed by Klasse Sealant.

I have been using the wool mit to wash, Sonus Ultimate drying towel, Sounus pads to apply the Klasse and Sonus polishing towels.

I am noticing tiny scratches in a couple of areas that weren't there before I starting using microfiber towels.

Does anyone else have this problem? I wash the towels after each use in liquid detergent and have them rinsed twice.

Why are microbiber towels better than 100% American cotton towels?

Thanks,

Ara

Thanks Jason. I did read this before.

I'm still not sold on the advantages of microfiber over cotton.

I don't know anything about Sonus MF towels, but just like cotton towels not all MFs are created equal. Some MFs are better than others. I wouldn't assume just because a towel is labeled MF that it won't scratch paint.

The best thing you can do to test an MF is to rub a CD with it. If it leaves scratches on a CD then it could leave scratches on your paint.

There's also technique to consider. No matter how soft your towels are if you rub them really hard against your paint then they will scratch. Also, you have to make sure if there is a tag on the towel that you remove it before use. The tag will definitely scratch.

Personally, I've been using MFs exclusively on my paint for several years now without any scratching.

I have scratched my paint with cotton towels.

I have not (to my knowledge) scratched my paint with the Excel MFs that I use.

That's enough proof for me that MF is better.

The two are not mutually exclusive. Microfiber refers to the diameter of the yarn, not what it is made of. What you are really saying is "I'm still not sold on the advantages of polyester over cotton."

ARA Im with you, I have found the 100% cotton terry towels (the good ones) hard to replace for my drying needs. I read all the posts about how MF towels are the best thing since sliced bread but I tried them, for the extra $$$ I don't see the benefit and as a matter of fact I get less performance from MFs than I do from cotton towels.

Now maybe for the professional detailers who earns his living doing this there is somekind of benefit to using MFs but for my personal needs it's hard to beat a nice thick terry towel under my hand when I go to dry. Using a MF (in my never to be humble opinion) feels like Im drying with a bed sheet or hankerchief.

I hope my personal opinion doesn't "wind up" the villagers (MF devotees) into turning this to one of those long rambling posts. Just as we don't all drive the same car, we don't all use the same equipment/products.

My Sonus MF WW towel couldnt even dry the hood of my car... let alone the whole thing... I found the Meguiars Water Magnet to be a bit better... but neither compared to my blue Viking MF Drying towels or my big white terry's!

Use whatever works for you. Whether MF (natural or artificial) or Terry Cotton towel or both in your detailing steps/process.

You can't have enough towels. :D

With Aloha,

Ranney :)
