Microfiber towels

I picked up a bag of them from Costco today, but plan on using them for interiors, door jambs, etc... 20 yellow 16x16 towels for $10. Can't beat that!

Wal-Mart has that BIG MF towell I use for drying. Sure works well for me. I can completely dry a long-bed full size pick-up and not wring the towell out once.

I am impressed with how it sucks up the water.

Forgot the cost but was only a little more than the 6-packs of smaller towells.

It has held up to 6 or so washings with no change in appearance, feel as according to the tactile senses and the water-sucking ability also stays the same.

I feel no need to buy the "fancy" high-priced critters as advertised on TV. Well, not on TV but as seen on various Web sites. Not to say those higher-priced fellahs' aren't better, just that for my needs I rely on Wally.

But, remember those infamous words of yore:

Thine mileage may vary.

I still use cotton cloth after applying my Liquid Glass sealant. The cotton seems to slide and glide across the surface better than MF.

Besides the color, whats the difference between the Sam's MF towel and the Costco MF towel? Is one better than the other?

I find that the yellow (microtex) sams club MF and the few costco ones I've had the chance to try have a tendency to lint like mad, whereas I've had NO lint at all from the sams hometex towels.

Not true. A high quality 100% supima cotton bath towel is just as safe as the highest quality microfiber.

There ARE cheap microfibers made that WILL scratch.

We're also going to have to redefine what "drastically better" means. Safer? NO. More absorbent? Yes.

That said...I use the Sonus Microfibers and they all pass the CD scratch test....as do all of my 100% cotton towels I use. :)

Well I guess that's what I meant, more that it's easier to buff product off with an MF than with a 100% cotton supima. I used to use the cotton exclusively, and resisted the MF movement for a long time, but now that I've started using the hometex, I'm never looking back. :xyxthumbs

I bought 2 packs of the HomeTex towels at Sam's and I agree they are great. They pick up the dirt like no other towel I have had before. Now I just need to find a good Waffle Weave drying towel somewhere.

I have many of the yellow costco towels @ 12 for $8.99, they are soft, and fluffy and do not scratch the paint, but I became spoiled by PakShak's towels, they cost much more but IMHO, are the best !

i'm sure they are nice, but there are other mf's out there that are just as good (not bashing). all that matters is what each person likes. to each his own.... :)

I wouldn't say that Costco or Sam's club mf's are just as good. You get what you pay for. I have some of them and holding them side by side there is definitely a different. If you don't want to spend so much for a high quality mf, I don't blame you. They get expensive. Just don't expect the same quality because they just aren't.

Pakshak's mf's are unbelievable. You need to own some of them to truly appreciate them.

I have been using very high quality 100% Suprima cotton towels for drying, polishing and buffing my cars without any problems with marring but recently decided to check out the microfibers.

I bought a set of DF towels. I liked the fact that they are 100% natural fiber MFs. They aren't cheap but they are incredibly soft and well made. They are great for buffing and QDing but not good at all for drying. Basically they don't absorb much at all but smear the water around, which is fine for a light misting with the QD but not good for a total soaking wash. I've found that I have to use my cotton towels for the initial dry-off and then use the DF towels to clean off the residue.

I recently received a set of Sonus Der Wunder polishing MFs as a complimentary give-away on a different website and am really impressed with them. I've purchased some cheap MFs from Target to use for glass cleaning and have checked out other OTC MFs (Meguiars, Viking). We don't have a Sam's club here and I don't belong to Costco so I can't comment but the DF Towel and Sonus MFs blow them away in terms of quality. It's a difference I can easily detect and feel and as far as I'm concerned I'll only invest in a higher end MF. I guess it's a personal prejudice of mine.

Since everyone has raved about the Pakshack towels I think I'll pick up a set of WW for drying. In the meantime I'll stick with my high quality cotton towels over a cheaper set of MFs. Of course YMMV. :)

I've got a decent assortment of mf, the only ones that touch my paint now are my pakshak mf. The others I use for interior cleaning and misc. Jinba you'll like the pakshak WW for drying, I can dry my full size p/u with one.

i understand what you are saying. but, it doesn't mean that you can't achieve the "same" results with other mf's... for example, the new megs supreme mf's which are relatively inexpensive, and available otc. http://www.meguiarsonline.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=5686

Agreed, there is a component called knowledge that goes much farther than product properties in determining The outcome of a detailing effort. I have many of the Costco towels, partially due to the incredible deal on them, and partially due to the way that they are when new, and how they change after a few washings. These towels softness lasts quite a while before I deem them interior towels. Later, wheel rags. The PakShak towels are the most durable and paint worthy.:xyxthumbs

i have microfiber towels from pakshak, top of the line, and sam's club. and except for color and cost i dont feel their is much difference in texture, quality.

After doing my own comparison of pakshak mf's and costco and sam's club mf's, I respectfully beg to differ but to each his own.

I just bought a 3 pack of 16x16 Microtec towels from Walmart for $5. I have been using terry cloths and old underwears for buffing my cars so I think anything will be an improvement. I've left residue on my car a few times but now that I have my M3 things will be different.

I read about a way to test the towels using a cd and rubbing hard on the recording side of the cd. I tried it with a 100% cotton washcloth, and old cotton t-shirt, and the costco microfiber towels. All but the costco towels left detectable scratches on the cd. So I've been using them on my new BMW and been happy.

Hey everyone,

I just recently joined the message board after reading many of the posts.

Right now for my personal detailing I am using terry cloth towels to do all of my work but I am wanting to switch to microfiber. So my question is this: Is a cheap microfiber towel still better than my terry cloth towels or should I wait until I can afford the higher quality microfiber toweling? I bought my towels awhile ago so they are starting to get worn out and dirty.

Thanks

Trial and error my friend. You'll just have to try all of them yourself to see what you like. Only way to find the complete solution to your answer.:D
