microfiber towels is it too good to be true????

hmmm. seems kinda risky if u mind spending 10 bucks. it is on ebay tho so it makes since for it ebing cheap. but who knows. take the risk. all in all if its not that good, u can always use em for wheels and mirrors alone with some interior work...

$9.99+ shipping, $6.40 to me, makes them about $1.65 each.
They are 14" x 14" rather than 16" x 16" as most of mine are.
The 16" x 16" being about 30% larger would justify $2.15 each if they were the same quality.
If you have access to a good quality MF, compare it to the ones at Wal*Mart.
The smaller ones really don't compare.
Interestingly enough the large blue Wal*Mart MF does seem to be pretty plush.
It might be worth finding out, but I think I would check for some seconds from some of the vendors on this site before I bought any of them.
I think some of the vendors have had cosmetic seconds for as little as $1 or $1.25 each. If I'm not mistaken, they were the same quality of MF, but had a flaw such as a frayed edge.
:dunno

I have to concur with the other guys...

While it may not be an awful deal, the quality might be a bit below par. If I were to buy something along these lines, they'd be STRICTLY for the 'ultra-dirty' parts where my MF's may go... (wheel wells, engine compartments, etc...)... more along the lines of 'an expendable' MF towel.

Those look EXACTLY like the ones you can get at Wal Mart. Plus, shipping kills the deal.
If I remember correctly, Wal*Mart has some that are 8 for $4.86.
I didn't buy any of those either.:D
Considering how long MF towels will last and the fact that I probably only have 20 to 30 of them, an extra buck or two for each seems like money well spent.

Charles

ps. 10 is probably plenty for most of us hobby detailers.

Yes Leo, I agree. I like to buy the higher quality MFs in bulk to help cut down on costs a bit. I might place one bulk order and have the MFs for a very long time, still as good as the day I got them. I would spend time hunting online to find deals on the high quality stuff.

My only real concern with pricing is that I do get a fair shake.
If I pay a little more for a better product or better service, I have no problem with that.
What I do have a problem with is paying a lot more for the same product and no better service or convenience.
An example, (intentionally not detail related), the SeaFoam fuel treatment/stabilizer I use. It was $3.99 at Auto Zone. Nice store, good location, friendly employees, didn't need any expert advice. The exact same product was priced anywhere from $4.99 to $6.99 at other stores in this area. Since I have a tough time believeing that Auto Zone sells products for no profit, it would seem that some of those retailers were overpriced. I shop around, so I know it, but how many people pay way more than a fair price for products because they don't know any better. Heck, I even know people that pay full sticker for a Ford or Chevy.

Anyway, back to the MFs. If I can save a buck on each MF and I buy 30,000 of them, I will have saved enough to buy my wife another GTP.
So, since I use about 20 MFs every 5 to 10 years, (an estimate, because I still am using the first ones I bought a couple of years ago), I can save that much in only, uuuh, 1500 years. Maybe I should come up with a different comparison. At my age, the MF thing might be a non-factor.
Sorry about that. :D

Surely not even the sickest of the sick on these forums would actually go out and purchase 30,000 MFs, well at least I highly doubt it.

You would only use 20 MFs in a 5-10 year period?? :eek During a semi comprehensive detailing session I might use 5 right there. (As in used and then put in the washing machine to be washed)

Hopefully you do realize that my post about buying 30,000 was in jest. :)

I meant used as in worn out and needing replacement.
As far as the 20 to 30 in a 5 to 10 year period, it might be pretty close. The first ones I bought from Ranney a couple of years ago are still like new and I really have no idea how long any of them will actually last.
While I might use 5 for a detail, (Probably more like 3), and wash them after each use, it would take 4 complete details to cycle through all 20, (Probably really have more like 30).
Based on the present rate of wear or more correctly, lack of wear, I'm not sure they will ever wear out.
One thing, I do use lots of old terry towels for the dirty work. The dirtiest my MFs ever get is after a S&W session.
To be more clear:
Buy good MFs.
Don't use them on really cruddy surfaces.
Wash them after every use.
IMO, They will have a lifespan so long you will replace them because you get tired of looking at the same ones, not because they are worn out.

They look like used towels to me . If cheap towels are what your after go to Walmart or Sams club.

While what you say is probably right, why would anyone want cheap, (as in low quality MFs)?
I would always be concerned that I would get them intermixed with the good ones and have a problem.
That's the reason I use the old terry towels. If it's terry, it's for grunge, if it's MF it's for paint or glass.

Whew!

Gotcha Charles. I was hoping all that, just had to hold onto my chair for a second there ;) :bigups
