Microfiber Confusion

I am trying to find the appropriate MF towels to buff the wax off my car. I have all the applicator pads I need, but I am not sure what MF towels I should get to buff off the wax (what brand, where to buy, and how many). I have searched, but that seems to only lead to further confusion. I appreciate any input. Thanks.

Get the 16 x 16 ultra MF towels. 15 to 20 towels to be on the safe side. The ultra fine MF towels are suited better for QDing IMO. While you're at it get a WW drying towel and you should be set for the year and the distinction of having the shiniest car on the block. Pakshak has some nice combo deals that might be of interest. Tell them you're a Autopia member and you'll like the price.



Remember to wash them as soon as you get some, hang dry and never wash with other garments because they'll grab loose fibres from them like crazy.
 
I'm sold on PakShak's MFs too for general-purpose detailing. (BTW, be sure to tell him you came from Autopia, for a special discount.) But for QDing I'm wild about Autopia's CBTs. And for drying I'm sold on MicrofiberTech's big waffleweave drying towel. There's a reason there are lots of towels: They all have a special purpose. To the extent your budget will allow, try to buy several different ones, and you'll see the differences for yourself.
 
Then there's DF Towels which is quite like the Autopia CBT.

Right now, testing the Sonus polish towel. Gold very heavy nap, edges sewn with what looks like silk.

What is it about the CBT that makes it such a good QD towel? Why prefer it over a microfiber towel?
 
I have a variety of MFs as well like everyone else. I have come to like the Autopia Khaki MFs as a general purpose towel, i.e. poroduct removal, interior detailing, etc. and the Sonus Buffing Towel (and Ranney's super plush yellow MF) for QDing. I use both Ranney's big blue WW and the Sonus Drying Towel as well - both great towels for drying and holding lots of water.

The CBT I say that this is the best ‘buffing’ towel I’ve used thus far (its so soft it should be immoral)

The ‘Ultimate Detailing Towel’ for general stuff and the ‘Sonus Der Wunder Buffing Towel’, a two-sided towel one side for buffing and one side for use with a QD, and Alpine DF 100% cotton ‘pocket’ applicators, a Waffle Weave drying towel, this collection covers every situation (not inexpensive but then quality isn’t either)

OK, here's a real basic question then. What's the difference between general detailing (on the exterior), buffing, QDing and final wipe? I don't understand the differences in each that requires different towels or different sides of towels. Sorry if this seems so simple, I just don't get it.

Yes, I've read that article. My confusion is that I have seen the CBT, Ultimate Detailing Towel (from Autopia) and Magic Towel (from CMA) all recommended as great towels for QDing, but they are very different towels. Would CBT be better for applying the QD and wiping it off, or would the dual-nap Magic towel be better? Why would a waffleweave be good, don't you need some cleaning power for QDing, not just buffing? Maybe all of this is merely personal preference, but I'm trying to get a handle on it.

~One man’s opinion / observations ~



General Detailing- medium nap-for wiping off detailing products (vinyl, leather, rubber dressings, etc)

Buffing-small tight nap, soft finish towel- after removing reside buffing finish to a gloss

QD- small nap for buffing and larger nap to ‘hold product (hence Sonus double sided towel) maintaining the shine by applying a QD spray. Do you need this many individual use towels, probably not, it’s just my way



This is what I use but I’m sure a professional would find a general-purpose towel to cover all or at least most of the bases (less expenditure)

I'm not sure I can give you the kind of technical info you might want. I would strongly urge you to contact DavidB about the Autopia CBT and DFTowel about his. They're both great resources here.



But ... as I understood it from them, and have seen myself. Regular MFs tend to "grab" product, which is what makes them so wonderful for buffing-off waxes and sealants. The loops (or maybe it's the fiber content) of CBTs and DFTowels tend to hold the QD so that the QD as a chance to "do its thing" on the paint.



All I know is that it's a lot easier for me to use tiny quantities of Z6 with these towels than with "regular" MFs.
