MF towels for buffing wax

Greetings all. I have been surfing this site for some time, and this is my first post. Based on what I have read here, I purchased a good quality MF towel from a reputable automotive store. I tried buffing wax off with it, and it does grab, so well that I had a hard time getting the wax off. When the towel stopped, the rest of it rolled right on. So I had to refold and start again. I figure that I must be doing something wrong, as it seems that everyone likes them.



I have been using them for windows, and they are really great for that.



I am by no means a proffesional detailer, but I do like clean and shiny cars. Any advice/suggestions appreciated.
 
I may try one of his towels. The person that I bought the towel from supplies a large number of the detailers in 3 or 4 counties in my area. He does not sell any second rate products, which is why I buy nearly everything from him. This does not mean that his towels are better/worse than pakshaks, just that I know the person and trust him. And I think that there are also some very knowledgeable folks on this site.



I wanted to use it primarily on a black 4runner, and not have to use a buffer. I am always looking for better products, especially those that reduce manual labor and give as good or better results. :D And if all else fails, the better half will have another towel for windows in the house! Thanks again for the information.
 
Just curious, what type of wax were you using. It sounds like the problem may have been leaving the wax on too long and not the towels. A sign of a good MF is plushness where it won't leave tiny scratches and durability where it retains it's softness wash after wash.



Once you wash them a couple of times you'll know then if they are good quality. Just remember never to wash them with your regular laundry as it will attract lint like crazy and hang dry.
 
There are stores that sell high end MF towels you just have to find them and the prices are a little high.

I second Khaki Towels. Ordered some last week and got a chance to use them this weekend. I would compare these to premium towels. Works well and feels soft even after washing.
 
I think it might have been a wax problem too .. I have all kinds of MF from cheap the expensive and they all are great for removal.. some just better than others.



Prolly had wax on to thick.
 
JrToyota- Welcome to Autopia. It sounds like you either had your wax on a little thick or let it set up too long before buffing it off. Or you just need to get accustomed to the "feel" of MF towels. They *do* "grab" more than cotton will.
 
The wax I used was Mothers cleaner-wax. It was the only thing I had left (and it is not my favorite wax anyway), so I put some on the hood of a crown vic which was in good shape to start with. It was humid that day and I was also trying out a new applicator, so it is entirely possible that I got to much wax on it. And the humidity was not helping me or the car. : D



I started taking the wax off as soon as it hazed over, but I think that you folks could be right about what happened. I have not given up yet.



If I can borrow a digital I will post a pic. My 4 runner is an '87, and age is rapidly catching up with it. It has spent a lot more time outside than under the carport.

I had an accumulation of pollen, dust, and a direct hit by bird droppings. What is it with a clean car and birds? Anyway, I used some QD and then a spray wax applied with MF towels. Far easier than cotton towels and a nice shine. I now believe that I must have had to much wax along with the humidity the first time.



BTW, I am guessing that this took all of 10-15 minutes. I believe you gentlemen properly diagnosed my problem. Thanks.
