MF towels & a few other ?s

I see Meguiars having a sale online for the NON-Meguiars MF (12 for $10) of the 16x16.

Anyone use these are they worth it? I also see the have their own for 3 for $6.59. Is one better over the other or is there a deal that I can out there where I can pick up some?

I want to start to pick up some detailing items for the Spring as I also want to pick up a PC thanks to all you guys and your extremely clean looking cars I can't stop reading everyones posts. I have a Black GMC Denali with light swirl marks and want to get to work on them. I am going to do a bit more learning before I start picking up some products but any suggestions would be great.

I use the 16x16 Supreme MFs from http://www.exceldetail.com

I haven't used any Meguiars MFs, or any off of their site.



When you do get your PC, I'd suggest Poorboy's SSRs to remove your swirls. Excel carries those as well, in addition to backing plates and pads.



A lot of people misinterpret their swirls as "light" or "minor". If they are indeed minor swirls, you should be able to remove them with one pass of SSR2 and a green pad.
 
I wanted to try the SSR2 first and if that doesn't cut it should I use SSR2.5? I am looking at the Edge Pad Kit that offers an assortment of pads as well as the quick connect adapter. So far this is what I plan on as far as products:



Clay bar-Not sure of brand yet

Poorboys SSR2- if not gettting out swirls will move to SSR 2.5

Poorboys SSR1- Do I have to step up to this or skip?

Poorboys Pro Polish OR EXP

Natty's Blue





How's that sound? (2001 Black Denali, guess I will find out if they are light swirl marks or not, right now its dirty but I will throw in a pic in a little while after I srcub er down.)

Can all of these products be applied with the PC? With the exception of the claybar of course.

And I would remove all by hand.

Thanks for the help, I know there are tons of products and personal preference so I figured I'd start with these products and move on from there, as the money gets low quickly from looking at all the options.

Yes, if SSR2 won't remove the swirls, use SSR2.5. You might need SSR1 after the swirl removal, because there could be a little hazing afterward. SSR2 and 2.5 generally leave a great-looking finish by themselves, but that's only if you allow them to break down completely.



Yes all of those could be applied by PC, though I prefer to apply waxes by hand. A PC pad can't reach everywhere, so you're going to have to use a hand applicator at some point anyway.
 
Hey Kevin, that was me who PM'd you... I was curious about the sale on mequiar's MFs.... If you could send the link for the 12 MFs for 10$ that would be amazing. I would love the MFs for interior or even wheel work. Thanks
 
My advice would be to start with SSR2.5 and not bother with SSR2. For some reason 2.5 is awesome on swirls, much better than the 2 in my experience. You can easily use a finishing type pad with SSR2.5 and not get any hazing (use 5-6 speed on the PC) and go right to wax. Use SSR1 if you want to be sure. :)

Chris, my thoughts exactly...This is why some folks chew pads up?

Absolutely. It works fine. I got to experimenting one day and this combo really worked well.. Try it. You'll like it. :)



They say necessity is the mother of invention. I was left with a finishing pad - not the gentlest LC VC but the one before the gentlest. Applied SSR2.5 and it worked well.
 
I was thinking after reading around that I would start with the SSR2.5. Many people had alot to say about using this product instead of the SSR2 as a start,

By the way, I was looking at a kit For Poorboys, PC, etc That has everything I should start out with from Autogeek. It comes with the Grey , Orange and White pad. Is this a good start?

Hey Kevex, Thanks for the link. I'm definitely going to pick up a bunch of MFs from that site, along with a meg's water magnet, and all kinds of brushes. Those prices just seem too good to pass up.



My PC is "in shipment" at the moment and I cant wait to get it. What age of car do you have, and what is the status of its paint? I am asking this because I was thinking also about starting off from square one with PB 2.5 just like you. But, when I clicked the box called "Learn" up at the very top, there were some articles I had missed. I read the one about polishing your paint too much. And, it got me thinking that I really dont need to start my 2003 black civic off with harsh abrasives unless neccesary, because since its back I will need to polish it many times over the years. I am going to try and save as much clear coat as possible.



So, I am going to start off with a Meg's Cleaner/Polisher that is not very abrasive. 1. so that I can use the PC with less worry about messing something up. 2. to start low on the abrasiveness because I really dont have aclue what "grit" I need.

Has anyone else tried this? From my experience with medium compounds to this point, I'd have to call it misinformation.
 
I've never tried 2.5 with a finishing pad. I've always considered finishing pads to be for LSP application, so I had no reason to ever try a finishing pad with a compound.
 
I just used about 6 of those blue MF towels ....the 12 for $10 on autodetailingsolutions....worked flawless for me.....I also picked up some meguires towels too, just for black cars though...the blue ones worked fine on my dark blue truck.....
