Methods for detailing at nite...

Forgett the Univerity, I'm bringing it straight to the gurus! Alright... It seems that latley the only time I have to work on my car is after the sun goes down. My wife thinks I'm crazy cause I want rig up an Eazy-Up canopy with 4 overhead flourecent light. I want to put 2 directly overhead, and then 1 on each side up top to light the side. #1 Will it work well enough and #2 What do you guys do when you need to work in the dark?

What exactly are you trying to do in the dark? I wash my car after sunset but use my outdoor light, and the rest in my garage with lighting. For swirl removal, I try and do it when its light out so I can see better.

Well one of the steps will be light scratch removal, so yes I am polishing. Even when I just wash the car I have trouble drying it without significant light. I always miss a few spots and then it looks nasty in the A.M.

What about halogen work lights on stands, from Home Depot? The problem I can see with fluorescent hanging overhead on the sides is that your work area on the the doors and such will be covered by your shadow. But if you have lights on stands you can move them to the most convenient angle.

Agreed.

Get a couple 500W towers (2x250W preferrably) and you're ion business. If you do some reading, you'll find most of us prefer to work under halogen light for polishing anyway.

Yes I was about to say almost everyone here loves halogen lamps. I use my leaf blower, followed by the absorber and I am done drying :)...

^^^ what he said ^^^

I use one 1200W, one 1000W and one 500W in my garage at night and move them around as needed.

get some bug spray though as your work area will beome a becon for every bug in the County.

I'd feel more comfortable with halogens on stands. The idea of rigging up flos in an Ez up canopy would concern me if they fall. I only use my Quick Shade (EZ up knock off) in the sun.

:xyxthumbs Good call on the bug spray!!! I would have never thought of that.

You know the funny thing is I have 3 (non-functioning) sets of thoes lights in my storage facility. The company wanted them in the shot, but they don't put out a light that is intense enough to freeze the action. So I used them once as props on a nite shoot for a snowboarding comapny. Never even turned them on, I just gutted them and placed some dyna-lite strobes in them. I will have to go see if all the components are still in the box. Thanks guys!
