Metabo questions

I know the Metabo uses a 1-6 speed dial like the PC. Does anyone know what speeds the numbers translate to?

Also, what speeds do you run the Metabo at? Do you run slower speeds for extended periods of time? I've heard the cooling fan depends on the motor running faster in order to work well.

I think the 3 setting is approx. 1,500 rpm (so I've been told). That's where I use mine at 95% of the time. I'll slow it down for wool pads if I need a lot of paint correction.

Does the faster the speed break down the polish better? Is there a certain speed that should be used with say a compound vs. a fine polish?

1 = 700

2 = 1100

3 = 1500

4 = 1800

5 = 2000

6 = 2200

The dial is infinitely variable and the number/speed values are on a silver label on the right hand side of the housing so you don't have to memorize or refer to any manuals.

edit: The above figures come from the newest Metabo model, the #12-175.

Whitethunder46- Most products will break down at any speed (at least the products I use) but higher speeds generally make for more aggressive work and are thus mostly used for major correction. Lower speeds are more gentle and are usually used for finer/final polishing operations.

There are a few weird situations like 1z polishes where high speeds (or even "normal for rotaries" speeds are too fast and break the abrasives down *too fast* for them to do the most effective correction, but those oddballs are very uncommon; 1z is the only product like that that I ever use.

I'd still like to hear whether anyone has problems running it at lower speeds.

No problems here, not that I've used it all that much so far.

Does anyone know the speed settings and the corresponding rpm speeds for the Harbor Freight Rotary (yes the $30 one :))
