Metabo overheating at slow speeds

Josh, I assure you I am not on a crusade against Metabo. I like most everything else about the machine and personally I figure that if this was a common problem it would have turned up here before. I searched here and across the Internet to try to find anyone else mentioning this as an issue. This is why it puzzles me that Metabo claims this is normal behavior. I'm not even asking them to pick up the dime on this one, I just want to know what's going on and if it can be fixed.

Oh yeah, and for anyone with a Metabo that tries slow buffing to see if they experrience a problem, I didn't feel heat through the handleright away. It's like it took a couple minutes to soak through the handle to the point it wasn't comfortable to hold it.

One last thought. Being a newb to rotary polishing and having a back that demands frequent breaks, now I'm wondering if part of this could be because, just like with my PC, I usually polish for a few minutes, stop for a bit, then start in again. Perhaps I'll torment the top of my dryer again today in an attempt to check this out. I'd better be careful though, if I burn through the paint I have to keep in mind that my wife has been eyeing an $800 top-load dryer at Lowes. ;)

Running on the 1 speed with a rotary is just biking up on a hill with the 21th gear on the bike. Its tough for the machine.

I hardly using the 1 speed on my flex, wich is a smaller machine then the Metabo. But on the higher speeds ~1200-2000 rpm I never have a problem.

If I was going to polish a car with 900rpm, my rotary would have been over heated in 5-10min. IE half the hood or something like that.

With larger pads then 6,5" it would take me two minutes.

I can’t guarantee it but I also have the gut feeling that it’s a problem with your unit. If it were normal you’d really expect brwill2005, crew219 and Totoland Mach to have experienced something similar.

I have the previous model, the PE7175, and it doesn’t have the head grip. It has a side handle but I usually leave that off. I mostly hold it by the bare metal drive housing. I tend to use it from about 1200rpm to 1500rpm, and not for multi hour marathon sessions, but it doesn’t get more than lukewarm.

I suppose it’s possible the Metabo guys don’t really know the model vary well. It’s relatively new and isn’t at all common over here. It’s designed and built in Germany. Maybe the guys over here are more sales/marketing oriented and don’t have the technical depth for each and every single product.

Like I said before, I wish I could find someone else around St Louis with a Metabo so I could make a comparison. You're right about it being designed in Germany, for some reason that totally slipped my mind when I heard the customer rep mention the product managers. For some reason I had it in my mind that he was speaking to guys actually involved in development of the unit.

At this point my options are limited. I could ask the seller for a refund, but I really believe he sold this in good faith and I've had it for a few months now. Weather and other factors dragged things out, not to mention having it in and out of the shop a couple of times. I could send it back to Metabo and hope they could find something wrong. Or I could just ask the local guy to replace the $50 module. For the time being, I'll probably just try to use it as-is at higher speeds.
