Messed up my car paint...

I got a jet black 98' camry. I wanted to make the stock black door handles Chrome so i purchased the Dupli-colorâ„¢ Instant chromeâ„¢ spray paint. So i used newspaper and masking tape to cover everything on the door except the door handle and began spray painting.



Everything looked perfect for now...... Then after it dried (only one handle so far), i pulled off the masking tape and the newspaper. Then...... DAMN!!!!! Where the paint was sprayed over the masking tape no harm was done. BUT, where there was newspaper covering the door, the chrome spray paint bled through the thin newspaper and went onto my black doors. I screamed Ah!, then i ran in the house put some dish washing liquid on a little scrub and scrubbed the areas where the pasint bled through.



luckily i was able to removed the chrome spray paint on the doors but the scrub caused a few scratches which i can take care of with some 3M rubbing compound.



most fortunately, i only tried it on one door handle so all the other doors and handles are allright.

Now what I really need is if there is a "How-To" (with pictures) on removing door handles for a 98" Gen 4 camry. or a different solution where i don't have to remove the handles. I'm tooo scared to paint with the door handles on the doors right now. Well, you learn from bad experiences.



Well if anyone can help me out, I would feel alot better and would greatly appreciate it. thanks for any effort on your part. :sosad

Try using a couple layers thick of wax paper instead of newspaper; it won't bleed through as easily. Or even better yet, a couple layers of wax paper and then some aluminum foil (so the foil isn't directly on the paint but is there as protection.

Painting them on the door is probably not such a good idea, because of the overspray/bleeding and also for the durability (it will leave a "raw" edge where it was masked off). most exterior door handles are removed by removing the interior door panel, and reaching inside the door there usually is 2 nuts (8 or 10mm) on imports. Once you get the handle loose you will have to play with the open/unlock mechanism attatched to the handle, most likely a metal rod that connects to the door latch assembly. Usually there is some sort of plastic clip that you must unclip to remove the rod, every vehicle has a different trick, just be careful! good luck.
 
Unfortunately I have no idea on how to remove your door handles. So here is an alternate suggestion.

Take Zip lock bags and cut them open and use them in the place of the newspaper. The paint should not bleed through the plastic bags. I would put newspaper over the top of the zip lock bags to absorb any over spray.

Test my zip lock bag theory first before you try this on your car.

Newspaper is filled with small perforations and will allow paint to seep through. Go to a paint store or home depot and pick up some masking paper. It usually comes in a roll and about 6" wide or more. It's made to mask off areas you don't want overspray to get on. It should be less than $10.00 for a roll.

I'm aslo a bit scared of disassembling my doors.
 
Disassembling and reassembling interior panels/parts is not difficult at all... just depends whether you have the courage to do it or not. Stripping cars to prep them for the track is always fun. :xyxthumbs

Is there any manufacturer that makes Chrome door handles for a Gen 4 camry? I searched ebay but they only got regular black ones.
 
My experience is that if its not on ebay then its probably not out there. Not too much in the aftermarket department for Camrys.



Something else that might work well is if you use some chrome looking vinyl to cover the handles with. It will look better and probably last longer than just painting them. In fact, you may even be able to apply it with the door handle still attached. You'll want to find a local sign company that works with vinyl to get the material from. Or you can go to trusty ebay and shop there. I know they make it in chrome and also a really sweet brushed aluminum color. I had some STi decals made out of the aluminum type and it worked out great.





edit: by the way, if you check out that ebay guy's other auctions you'll see that aluminum vinyl as well as some pretty cool looking diamond plate vinyl too. Mmmmm....vinyl. :cool:

:) Super thanx, for the great suggestion. I feel alot safer with using adhesive chrome strips. That is such a genius idea; you're brilliant! I hope the vinyl isn't that thick.



Do you happn to know anything about how strong its adhesive is, I don't want it to fall off during the highs & low temps of Chicago.



It sounds really promising for me & will hopefully solve my plight.

I used carbon fiber vinyl on the sideskirts of my Integra. It lasted 2 years in snow and shine before I sold the car. It was still there last time I saw it. I think it will probably last longer than your paint will. The vinyl isn't really that thick either. just cut some out to fit and then use a hair dryer to heat it up and get it to conform and sort of melt around the edges. It should clean up great and look a lot better than spray paint.

I see where you're comin' from. I know Camrys aren't very popular cars in the style department; they're like meant for old people or something but right now it's the only car I got and I got it as a gift from my dad. I just wanted to trysomething new with it & so I decided on some ghetto spray paint for the handles since I couldn't find any OEM or aftermarket chrome handles for the car.



I'd rather have an Acura TSX (black) but i don't have the $$ right now so I'm just playin around with the car got.
 
It could look alright on a Camry. I used to date a girl with chrome door handles on her Altima. My 4 Runner had silver door handles too. Its not a look that is as used now as it was in the 90s, but that doesn't necessarily mean its ghetto. Now, spray paint would be ghetto. It would take about three times opening the door before it starts to crack the paint. At least with vinyl you can take it off if you get tired of it.



I've got a car where there isn't much I can do with it too. The aftermarket industry hasn't picked up on the 05 Subaru Legacy just yet. Most of the stuff is all in Japan and it won't fit my car anyway unless I want to swap front ends and stuff like that. So I've been doing my customizing in unique ways just like what you are trying to do. If I ever end up parking next to another Legacy that is the same color then I don't want to have any problem figuring out which one is mine. ;) Its the little stuff like putting the silver door handles on your car that will make it stand out and be unique. Props for the creativity. :bigups

Yeah, but it's a Subaru with a turbo engine (yours is turbo, right?) so it won't take long for them to pick up on it.



I've actually been surprised at the very limited ammount of modifications available for my new vehicle, which is a 2002 GMC Envoy. Aside from grilles, some gaudy-looking exterior accessories, and the factory GM issue stuff, I haven't seen anything really good mods-wise.
 
:) Yup. Its the turbo and that is all the modification I need right now. If I had about a gillion dollars then I could really make this car something sweet, but with everything cool being made for the cars in Europe and Japan it ends up costing an extra couple hundred bucks more than it should to get even the smallest thing over here. I guess I'll just stick to simple stuff like stickers for awhile. ;)
 
Jngrbrdman, there is a HUGE aftermarket for the LGT's. They/you have the same motor as the USDM STi's.



Let me know if you need any modding advice as one of my close friends owns one of the new LGT's as well.
 
That's all under the hood modding though. I'm just talking about 'non warranty voiding' appearance stuff. :D I'm happy with how the LGT performs under the hood. In fact, after visiting with the boys out at COBB I'm not convinced that a lot of the 'upgrades' that people do to their LGT is actually doing much. COBB convinced me of that much. I like my car the way it is for now. I wish someone would make a carbon fiber hood for it, but I'm patient enough to wait. I'd like to see someone get creative with the tail lights too, but again.. I can wait. I bought it because I like it and don't really have much to change on it.
