Menzerna IP/FP vs. Poorboys SSR2.5/SSR1 (pics included)

I had a chance to play with Menzerna IP and FP for the first time on a totally trashed hood of a 1998 F-150. This truck has never seen a day of love. Major swirls and scratches plus oxidation have taken over this truck.

I figured I would compare IP and FP with PB's SSR2.5 and SSR1.

Application was with a PC. I hit the right side with 2.5 and a polishing pad on speeds 5 and 6, which to my suprise did a very good job considering the shape, However I decided to step up to a cutting pad and 2.5 which in turn gave me hazing. No big deal, I followed w/ SSR1 and that cleared right up.

The left side was done with Menzerna's IP and a cutting pad on speeds 5 and 6. I recieved minimal hazing, again I followed w/ FP and it cleared right up.

*I* feel the competition between the two were very close. I needed to work 2.5 a little longer than IP and had to hit the area to be corrected a few times w/ 2.5, as with IP I only had to apply two applications and had to work it less time. I did 2-3 passes on each area and the results were damn near identical IMO.

SSR 1 and FP were also neck and neck. Both did what was expected, both were easy to use. Again I feel results IMO were almost identical, with FP with a slight lead because I feel it produced a bit more gloss and shine than SSR1.

Considering the condition of the hood both products did extremely well with the use of a PC. Rotary results may have put one product over the other but these two were compared by PC.

If I had to choose between the two I would go with either one but would choose Menzerna. I felt I got a little faster results w/ IP and like I stated FP provided a bit more gloss. The pics are not that great due to poor lighting. I tried using different settings on the camera but:nixweiss

When the pics were re-sized the quality diminished, I apologise but I hope you can see the results.

Good review. I just tried IP the other day without much success on my black Infiniti G35. I considered purchasing 2.5, but after your review, I'll give IP another chance before spending more of my hard earned money. I didn't have the PC up to the 5-6 that you recommended. Did you experience any dusting with the IP and how did you prime the pad?

Thanks :)

Micnic- Yes I did get a little dusting w/ IP but alot more with 2.5

Turn your speed up, Menzerna products are generally for rotary use so get your speed up and use a little pressure but don't bog down the PC to where it doesn't do a whole lot of spinning. You still want some spin. I dampened the pad with water and layed down a couple lines of polish on the paint then smeared the product w/ the PC off. I started the PC about 4.5 -5 to spread the product the cranked it up to 6 worked it until it appeared transparent or clear.

I am going to try the SSR 2.5 here in a couple of days. Would you mind telling me the application process. In other words:

1. How much to place on the pad per 2x2 section?

2. How long do I work it in?

3. When will I know I'm finished?

4. What do you use to buff it off with (buffing bonnet or MF towel)?

JJ- I just applied a complete circle of product around the pad and then some towards the center if that makes sense, Sometimes I apply an "X" over the pad. As your pad gets *primed* you will need less product.

I work it until it starts to dust slightly or becomes somewhat clear. Usually until it slightly dust. SSR2.5 breaks down fairly quick so if you work it that extra minute or so it helps polish back the shine. I just do 2-3 slow passes a section. Again that depends on the severity of the defect. You may find you can do less passes or have to move a little slower. You may also notice a little hazing left behind,(not always) just follow up with some SSR1 or something less abrasive. I would try using a polishing pad first.

I just use a quaility MF towel to buff it off. It removes very easily.

Thanks for the review :).

The Menzerna side looks a *touch* deeper.

On a rotary, the results are a bit more distinguished. With the Menzerna coming out victorious.

Great review and some nice tips! I didn't know you should push down so hard with Menzerna to get even better results...thanks for the tip.

Thanks for the info. I also have some ssr 1 that I will use as well. I'm hoping the 2.5 doesn't cause micromarring and I can proceed from there. Thanks for the write-up!

JJ

To avoid micromarring let up on the pressure and make another pass or two. Not much you can do with a cutting pad, but with LC orange pad, it is possible to go right to lsp.

aren't the type of abrasives used in these two lines very different? interesting that they gave such close results-good work
