Meguiar's Solo System

Ok, I had some small marks here and there on the hood, but today I saw a huge chip that goes all the way to the metal (big ouch!). My car is a bit older, so I am concerned with the touch up paint matching my paint.

Secondly, where might I go to get good touch-up paint? I have a 1989 Black 325i.

Thanks.

Buy the clearcoat too.

The match will probably not be great as your car is pretty old and I'm sure the paint has faded a bit. Worth a try. Keep some PreClean handy so if you try it and it doesn't match, you can remove it quickly.

I've tried dealer touch up paint and paintscratch's paint and the Paintscratch mathed perfectly, as opposed to the dealer's bottle.

I believe most touch up paint is from one or two manufacturers.

I suggest going to the dealership and asking them. Might pay more but what the heck it is a great car and aint she worth it?

If to the metal though you need primer of some sort to protect against rust etc.

Compound & Polish Swirl-free in One Step

Meguiar's Cut & Polish Cream #86, from Meguiar's Solo One Liquid System, is perfect for one-step compounding and polishing with swirl-free results. Meguiar's Cut & Polish Cream utilizes uniformly sized, non-diminishing abrasives that provide varying results when used with different Solo pads.

Meguiar's 7" Solo "Diamond" Foam Finishing Pad is formed with diamonds cut into the face. This revolutionary design removes light swirls and holograms while delivering a swirl-free performance. Meguiar's 7" Solo Foam Finishing Pad diamond pattern also provides smoother buffing action with less chatter. Use this pad in conjunction with Meguiar's Solo One-Liquid Polishing System.

Meguiar's 7" Solo Foam Finishing Pad gray foam is an open cell structure so air flows through the pad as you use it to reduce heat. The foam also has just enough cut to remove fine swirls, but is soft enough to fit the shapes of your vehicle.

The backing of the Meguiar's 7" Solo Foam Finishing Pad is recessed to provide error-free centering on a 6" hook and loop backing, and an even connection to eliminate vibrations. This pad can be used on rotary polisher as well as orbital and dual action polishers.

Meguiar's recommends using Meguiar's 7" Solo Foam Finishing Pad on a rotary polisher with Meguiar's W66 "Easy-Buff" Backing Plate for Rotary Polishers. Use these pads on a dual-action polisher with Meguiar's Unigrit? Professional 6" Backing Plate or any 6" backing plate of your choice.

Meguiar's 7" Solo Wool Light Cutting Pad has a unique 1" wool fiber blend for light cutting with less aggressive, safer cutting. This pad was specifically designed to work with Meguiar's #86 Solo Cut & Polish Cream. This combination will remove defects, level paint, and restore paint.

Meguiar's 7" Solo Wool Light Cutting Pad has a flat pad design which expands the cutting area to reduce buffing time. Shorter fibers are best for defect removal and gives a softer feel to reduce the possibility of overheating the paint.

Meguiar's utilized advanced Unigrit? Technology to deliver even cutting and polishing for light swirl and blemish removal. When Meguiar's Cut & Polish Cream is used with a Meguiar's Solo Wool Light Cutting Pad, you can accomplish most defect removal. Follow this with Meguiar's Solo Diamond Foam Polishing Pad to achieve a swirl-free finish.

The Meguiar's Solo System provides:

Both compounding and polishing in a one-liquid system
Advanced Unigrit? Technology for level cutting and swirl removal
Designed for paint and body shops, but is user friendly
VOC compliant in all states
Eliminates multiple steps using multiple products
The Solo System is best used with a rotary polisher.

with my back that looks like something i could use. heaven knows this three step system i'm lookin at aint gonna happen anytime soon... waiting for some expert opinions on this product.

The Solo System really is a great product line. For me, the highlight is M86. Think of it as a less aggressive version of M105 that dusts less and finishes better. Plus, it works in every condition, hot or cold.

While I have not used the Solo foam pads, the wool pads and backing plate are excellent. The Light Cut wool pad works well for those, like myself, who do not care for those stiff cutting pads.

If you are a DA kind of user and do not care for the new version of M105, give M86 a try. It really is simple to use.

Because of the "for fresh paint" recommendation, many users have ignored this product...

Interesting new product........

I wonder what differences are between Solo and M151..........?

I am assuming you mean D151 (the paint reconditioning creme)?

So1o has been out for a while (it predates Meguiar's M105) and was Meguiar's first non-diminishing abrasive polish.

As Chris stated, M86 is really the gem of the product line. It produces less cut then M105 in most cases, but finishes out a little bit better, and is very easy to use.

The entire system was developed (or at least marketed) to body shops as a single liquid/4 pad approach. That is the cutting could be done on with a wool pad and a rotary then immediately finished with a foam pad and the same liquid.

Despite how it is marketed both the pads and the polish have a lot of cross over for detailers.

I love the So1o pads on a rotary, the So1o finishing pad being amongst my favorite.

The backing plate is already semi famous and highly regarded.

In comparison to D151, M86 (So1o) is a pure abrasive polish. D151 is an all in one has a wax/sealant in. M86 is much more aggressive with near equal finishing ability. In fact they make a pretty powerful two step for production oriented work.

Thanks for that answer Todd.........
