Love my 2005 Spectra SX!
Hi, i just bought meguiar's scratch x for those ugly swirl marks. I haven't used it yet but i plan to when the weather improves, but i was contemplating on whether i should use the scratch x or the meguiar's clay bar kit to get rid of the swirls.

You see i have a brand new car with nice rice new black paint which shows a lot of blemishes. So i don't want something that will work but then the swirls will come back.

Scratch X. I replied to your previous post.
 
The Scratch X will only hide the swirls. The clay bar will do nothing to remove swirl marks.
 
You will need either a DA or rotary buffer and pads. With you being a beginner, I would highly suggest a Porter Cable DA buffer. You will also need some swirl removers. Do a search for swirl removal and start reading up. 90% of the questions that you might have will be contained in those threads.

ScratchX will remove swirls with a lot of time, patience, and elbow grease. I've done it and seen it done. I will use ScratchX sometimes to get into tight places by hand that a machine polisher won't go. It's a decent product for locally bought stuff, although you better be prepared to do some serious work if you plan on dong an entire car with ScratchX.

Also, a clay bar is not used for "swirl" removal. It is used to pull contaminants out of the paint in a way that polish can't do. Two separate tools that perform two separate jobs.

I was just going off of personal experience. I've exhausted my arm with that product and have had no luck with removal. It only hid.
 
Well rotary buffers burn the paint off you're car, and takes off the finish. And that's something i don't want to to do.

It will only burn your paint if you don't know what you are doing. That's why I suggested the DA buffer. I've been at it for over 2 yrs now and still am a bit afraid to step it up to rotary.
 
Scratch X says that it is clearcoat safe, but is it really? If it is going to take away the clearcoat, then i rather not do anything.

Meguiars has an excelent line of products and a reputable reputation. If they claim its safe for clear coats i would then test it on a small hidden area first.
I have used Scratch X with very good results on the hood and fenders of a black Subaru Suv. If you plan on doing the whole car by hand do some type of exercising warm ups before you start :wink: .
 
put some gold class liquid on it every couple months and it will look great ..it has fillers .. or spend money on buffers and pads .. the key is to limit swirl marks by using proper washing and drying methods .. clean wash mitt, clean bucket with grit gaurd . and probably a good microfiber drying towel ..
 
What kind of wash mit should i use? they have all different kinds. I used meguiars's NXT synthetic polymer wax. It didn't really help with the swirls, i think it made it worse. I thought sythetic polymer was the best at protecting your car?

By the way i was thinking of doing this on a nice day. washing the car the "proper" way. and drying it with that microfiber towel. Then using the clay bar, then scratch X, then the meguiar's synthetic polymer wax, and a final mothers carnauba wax to top it off. Isn't that like the ideal combination?
 
be careful claying a black car because if something gets in your clay you could really scratch your car up .. then you will need a buffer to clean up that mess ... i use large square wash mitt i get from my local vendor .. keep it real simple unless you are ready to spend some bucks and get obsessed with it .. too late youre already a d.c. member ... good luck
 
make sure your not using a cleaner wax for your LSP, it'll remove everything you've done before, and make it a waste. For a local setup, pick up the Meg's 3-step from autozone. Its a good product for what it is. Good luck
