Meguiar's Says There Are No Cleaners in No. 20....

Well, after being totally confused by a recent post that said that <strong class='bbc'>Meguiar's No. 20 Polymer Sealant[/b] has a mild cleaner in it, and that cleaner would remove any first coat of No. 20, I emailed Meguiar's and asked them. After not getting an answer fastenough (it's never fast enough for me;)) I called them.

The tech I spoke with said that there was no cleaner, just "a very mild polish" and multiple coats were possible.

Then this evening I finally get an email back:

Len,

Thank you for your message and your interest in our products. That is
not true. There are no cleaners in the product to strip off wax. I would
actually recommend applying two coats onto your vehicle.
If you have any other questions feel free to write in at any time. If you
would like to talk to me personally, you can call me at 1-800-854-8073 ext.
133.

Thank you,
Ben Schoening

Hope that answers that, although I wish they'ld get their story straight.

Sorry, got confused over the cleaning...wait polishing action of #20.

Meguiars offers good customer service but sometimes the info is neither here nor there, in other words un-clear sometimes.

Un-clear is an understatement Jason, an understatement. Thankfully the professional series of products, and a few of the other line, work well, even when Meguiar's info is ambiguous.

I understand how a cleaner can not be a polish, but how can a polish not be a cleaner? I am so confused. If you have water spots or light dirt spots and a cleaner\wax removes them you have cleaned it. If you have a polish that removes them you have also cleaned it, or am I wrong?

I called Meguiar's 800 number back in July and asked whether the #20 has any abrasives in it. They said no.

I'm sure that will clear up all of the confusion...:)

I actually called this Rep. since I'm still looking for a one-step product for my truck. He did recommend two coats and pre-clean/polish if necessary. He also did not recommend a topper as a normal wax may not adhere properly.

Just like zymol does not contain any petro components.....

And nu finish tells you on the bottle to reapply in a week or two for best protection......etc,etc

Actually it says one month. ;) I never use it on anything that warrants additional coats anyway....

Thanks RH, I was going to correct the comment about NuFinish but since nobody here cares much for the product, I didnt say anything :p

I currently use NuFinish on my beater (1990 Subaru Legacy L Wagon, 38k miles!!). I think I get bigger beads with NuFinish than Zaino (I got HUMONGOUS beads on the roof of the wagon..im talking 6"+ diameter here), but it isnt very slick. Everything beads but doesnt really run off the car nicely.

Regardless, I dont plan on applying NuFinish more than twice a year..hopefully once a year like it says on the bottle!

Why dont they package it in a smaller bottle? They can make a higher profit on a smaller bottle (less of a volume discount, I suppose) and it wont leave so much of the product as waste.

I used NuFinish as a sealant for the paint on my wheels . . . I like it for that application, at least, because of its cleaning properties. I'll never use it on the rest of the car, but it was great at cutting through road grime and brake dust on the wheels that didn't want to release, it dried quickly, it wiped off easily, and it's inexpensive.

I, for one, was not too impressed with the cleaning abilities of NuFinish. It sure smells horrible (lots of solvents), but did not do much for the color/shine of my beater. Granted, the paint wasnt in horrible condition, but could have used some clay first I suppose.

On my old truck. It really brought out the RED as it had no clear coat, and the products polishing abrasives helped (1986). For clearcoated cars, I would not use it more than 4 times a year. It is harsh and abrasive, but works well on older cars and is durable. THEWAXTEST rated it poorly in durability.....still scratching my head on that one. My dad uses it on his boat and the hull beads for months. It does make a mess with dust and residue on black trim too.

ps.....usually the smaller the beads, the better the protection. When they get big, it means the protection is wearing off!

DK: That is pretty wierd considering the Nu Finish is a few weeks old (big beads ever since applying it) and my Zaino'd cars (Integra and 330i) bead very large as well, but I know they are protected (they have to be with that shine!!)

Another thing...on any given surface, the beads should be approximately the same size and uniformly dispersed, correct? I suppose the science behind it is VERY small beads, uniformly dispersed, same size.

I dont know. Im not convinced beading is the best measure of protection. Slickness is much more convincing to me, when combined with water bead formation.

How strange....I have a bottle of #20 and it says right on the back label: Cleans, polishes and protects ! Maybe Meg`s can expand on why they print one thing on the label and tell you another on the phone ?

<strong class='bbc'>TBone [/b] you're. I have two bottle here of #20, and that is what they say on the back. I wish Meguiar's would get their act together and like <strong class='bbc'> Guess My Name[/b] said, define "clean" and "polish" for us. Of course, I spoke with one, and email another......<strong class='bbc'><em class='bbc'>and got two different answers!![/i][/b]

I've noticed that Meguiar's is constantly changing their descriptions and definitions of products...at one point, they were promoting Gold Class as a "synthetic" and a "polymer". Now, there's no mention of those terms anywhere - products or websites.

Seems like they're unsure of what they've got!

<strong class='bbc'>Can you trust Meguiars????

The best question yet! [/b]</blockquote>
Based on my experiencce with thier "Mirror Glaze Professional" series of products over the last 15 years, my answer is yes.

Guess we have to ignore the marketing hype when we recognize it.
