Meguiars or Optimum Polish?

Hey guys, I just bought a 7336 from lowes and was gonna purchase the edge DA kit from auto geek. The thing is, I have a really bad scratch on my red honda civic, its on the front bumper. It was caused from rubbing on a metal pole. I did the finger nail test and it doesnt catch.



I was planning on maybe removing it with Meguiar's 83 following with Meguiar's 80. I was wondering which is the equivilant of these two products on the Optimum Line. Which brand will be easier to work with and produce better results in your opinion?
 
If it's an isolated scratch you could start out using something like Meg's ScratchX by hand, this way you are able to focus only on the scratch.



I like both lines. They are somewhat different but roughly #80 = OP, and #83 = OC. I love #80 as a last step polish on old worn paint, especially single stage, it really nourishes the paint. I primarily work by rotary though.
 
I have not used the meguiars, but the Optimum products are very nice, and pretty highly popular. I would get the opt compound and the polish, from what I read about the megs they are equivalent.

I'm sure both will work well enough for you. I stick with Meguiars because it is easier to find locally if I am running low, although I try to purchase most of my stuff from ADS.
 
Ive been a Meguires 80's series user for sometime now and just recently bought the all 3 optimum's.

I also wondered what optimum was equivalent to in the megs 80 series.

So OC=#83 and OP=#80?

What is OHC equivalent to in the megs 80 series?

You think i went overkill in buying OHC since i only use a PC?

By PC, I was unable to distinguish any difference between OHC and OC. There has been talk about OHC being reformulated to have more cut, but I don't think it's been released yet.

Yeah it was mentioned that the new OC is very similar in cut to the old OHC. I think the new OHC was released very recently. Look at your bottles for a sticker that indicates if it's a new formula.
 
the new hyper is already out isnt it (or are they re-formulating again?)....and I can definitely notice more cut in OHC compared to OC via PC with a cutting pad or a light cut pad...



megs products tend to dry up too fast, especially on the PC with speed 6 on whatever pad you choose...maybe thats why megs reps say on a PC stick with speed 5 and light pressure...optimum products almost never go dry, so you can use a lot less product saving you some money

I cant see that being true, i have found that #80 and #82 work for ever and ever and ever. They are filled with oils.

Yes the new Optimum HyperCompound is out. It has so much more cut than the old. The new Compound is like the old HyperCompound. I find that the HyperCompound works better with the rotary but you can still achieve good results with the PC.



You can't go wrong with Optimum polishes.

Coupe, I'm with you. The only way I can see Meguiar's 80 series products going dry too fast is if used with very porous, open cell foam. Haven't had it happen to me, but I use Meguiar's foam only for their products. M80 and M82 almost work a bit too long for my liking in some cases...I've never had them go dry too fast. I could see that being someone's perspective if they are used to Optimum or some products that are wetter.



However, I have heard Optimum's products are excessively long working. One person I know from another board said 4-5 minutes in a typical 2X2 area with a PC. That would drive me nuts having to work it that long by PC. I still plan to experiment with OPT, but haven't done so yet.
 
I don't know about the super long work times by personal fact, only what I've read elsewhere. OPT sells it as a long work time product, so :nixweiss
 
If your Civic is clearcoated, I think Optimum would give you better results. If it is a single stage paint job though, Meguiars has a slight advantage. The polishing oils really seem to help on older single stage paints, probably because when the 80 series polishes were developed, there were still a lot of single stage paint jobs. Overall though, Optimum's polishes are a bit more user friendly than Meguiars but you can't go wrong with either line.

Sounds like they are using too much product then. Less is more with Optimum.

Scottwax, how do you mean user friendly? I've not used OPT's products yet, but they sound tempting.



I know in comparison to 3M, Meguiar's seems to not be as "friendly". When comparing there, I mean that 3M seems to work a broader range of problems, where Meguiar's makes you use several different products and pads. Meguiar's products in general give me the feeling of being more cautious than 3M. Using 3M seems to say, "You want to remove those defects, then use this product. It's strong and it will dust, but it will work."
 
PRB-the Optimum line of polishes work great. The Compound and Polish should be all you need unless you are dealing with really bad swirls and scratches. Both can be worked forever without drying out and no dusting at all. The Compound finishes off really nice and doesn't leave a haze unless you are using an aggressive pad. In the past I used Megiuars polishes a lot, then I switched to Poorboys, and now I use nothing but Optimum.
