Meguiar's D151 opinions

I applied 3M SMR by habd in front to back motion on a green Acura that I had compunded with Tru Grit followed by 3M Perfect IT 3. The paint WAS swirl free but after using SMR on the hood I see marring up and down the entire hood.

Id like to know why SMR is supposed to remove swirls when all it created were more swirls? With these results, do I dare try to use it again on a BLACK truck?!

Granted I used Klasse SG X3 and the marks werent visible. On the other hand I know those marks are still on the paint. :scared

Please advise,

Ryan

Im having a hard time understanding why you would use SMR on a car that was swirl free?

Anyway, I'd try using it again but rub longer to wear down the abrasives, and/or follow up with a paint cleanser.

Yeah, you really need to work the stuff in, so rub a lot and start by rubbing hard, then by lightening up some gradually. Or get a PC! :) Personally, I prefer Meg's #9 Swirl Remover 2.0, by hand or by PC. It's easy to use and it's more forgiving if you don't work it in well enough.

Meguiars says to use a cleaner after the smr too but I dont believe this will be enough for a 66 olds cutlass. Especially by hand.

Since I spoke with a guy at meguiars. First he said what you need to remove swirls is a cleaner/ polish, and the SMR #9 product has NO abrasives in it. I think I am REALLY confused cause I call tehm for help and I get some crazy lame response. Ill never get this truck done at this pace.

I have found myself (it happended to me), if the car is almost swirl free and you are over using the swirl mark remover, it will cause swirls itself. You are rubbing the car when it is not needed, you need to really work in the swirl mark remover which is also causing swirls, when removing your causing swirls. Remember, swirl mark remover is abrasive, if your not using it on swirls it is still abrasive...

If you want to use something over the surface to make the paint shine before using wax or such, try a coat of Meguiars glaze....

I had no luck with Meguiar's customer service. He told me the #9 had absolutely no abrasives in it and was a chemical swirl remover. I just flat out asked him how the heck something could remove swirls chemically . . . was this stuff paint thinner??

He said no, it's has lots of feeder oils and is used to lubricate the surface, the rotary is what's removing swirls. I asked if it worked by hand as well and he said yes . . . I trust the people here much more than the people they have working at Meguiar's, I could have argued with him all day . . .

Well, it's officially too cold for me to wash outside anymore and I'm looking to speed up the auction cars I work on. So it's time to move on to ONR wash, but to limit my time out in the frigid garage (even with heat) I wanted to try Meg's D151 instead of 105/205. Before I buy some I was just curious if anyone had any opinions or comparisons to share. Thanks!

I have used Meguiars D151 on many 1-Step Details where the Client wanted only a clean shiny, protected paint vehicle, and it delivers very well. I have used it with a Rotary only, so dont know how it will work with a Random Orbital, but have to think it will work well, probably just take longer to break it all down.

Depending on your pad choice and machine, it can correct down pretty darn good with the abrasive package it has, and it leaves a nice, glossy, finish.
The instructions on the gallon jug say that an additional coat of it with a finishing pad will even add more protection and gloss to the paint.
Hard to beat, it does both things (at a more limited amount) than the 105/205 Dynamic Duo, in 1 product, and leaves a nice, clean, glossy finish.

Yeah, I've got a PC but I'm only gonna keep it to one step. They're generally older cars so I don't need to get crazy go nuts.

If this is for older vehicles, going to the Auction, trade in's, etc., then this product will do an outstanding job for cleaning the paint, removing alot but not all scratches, etc., and leave a nice layer of gloss and protection.

I just thought of something we used to do back in the day of Rotary power, compounds and glazes - I remember putting down a bead of a really nice finishing compound -something like 3M Perfect it and a bead of Cleaner Polish and buffing them both in at at the same time. Presto, the first trial of the
Meguiars D151, etc., products, many years before they were born ! :):):)

I imagine if you got in a pinch and needed to do something without your product of choice, this configuration would still work...

A great one step, I use it with a DA 5.5" lc flat orange or white pad. I do not know how long it protects as I always top it with a sealant, opti seal or collinite 845 mostly.

By itself, not very long!

Topping it is a must.

I used it with my PC and ended up getting rid of it after a horrible experience with a black VW Jetta. It looked good in the garage but looked like crap itself in the sun. My buddy down the road loves M151,but he says you need to apply via rotary - I think he's on to something.

I probably used too much and didn't polish long enough, but I wasn't impressed by it - at least not on that car.

YMMV
