[Meguiar's] #83 DACP not enough

Hi,



I used #83 DACP on a W7000 cutting pad but it didn't do much for the scratches. I passed over the area twice with no additional pressure on the Makita 9227C.



I polished until it was no longer visible (no film present) but I did not let it dust at all.



The car has dual-stage paint.



Should I resort to #2 Fine Cut Cleaner or #84 Compound Power Cleaner?



I know for a fact from this thread that #2 Fine Cut Cleaner is more agressive than #83 DACP but I'm not sure how it measures up to #84 especially on BC/CC paint. :nixweiss

I thought I read that some have had success by using some pressure initially, getting the product worked in well, then easing off . What RPM are you using? I know other, more frequent #83 users will chime in here.
 
Hmm, my #83 didnt work so good either. But , when bust out the SSR 2.5 and SSR3, it work out great. It remove alot of swirl and some deep scratches too.

Try those PW SSR and give a shot.
 
I've watched a Meg's video clip online which suggested using pressure initially when working with the cutting pad to fully work in the diminishing abrasives. A lot of the Autopia posts on rotary usage suggest using only the machine's weight for pressure. :nixweiss



I was using around 1200-1400rpm. Again, the Meg's video I watched suggested about 1500rpm to 2000rpm for "best results" but then again this same video showed the detailer spin the pad to that rpm setting before it touched the paint to pick up the bead of polish.

Of course, I followed Autopian standards by starting the rotary with the pad on the paint (and on the product). I used 600rpm to "pick up" the foot-long bead of DACP and gradually upped it to 1200-1400rpm and kept it at that rate for about a minute or two - at which time the DACP was no longer visibly present (no dusting).



I have Menzerna IP on hand with a CMA Orange Power Pad waiting in the wings but both products are milder than #83 DACP with the W7000 cutting pad. As much as possible, I'd want to stick to Meg's products for the purposes of this discussion.



Any other questions or suggestions?
 
#2 Fine Cut is recommended for rotary use not PC-Poorboys SSR's tend to work better with a PC than a rotary from what i've read
 
I'm going to be naughty by ignoring your request to stick to Megs and suggest you try Menzerna PowerGloss.



More powerful than IP but breaks down to the same level leaving a very reasonable finish.
 
Try to apply a "little" pressure but keep moving. (and not to mention the fact the Makita 9227 is the lightest rotary in its class.) This I do when #83 seems not cutting the surface. If that doesn't do, try a more aggressive product.



Although we have a set of do's and dont's here in Autopia, I'd say they're just the general rules. There's always an exception.

Alfisti, I'd love to use PowerGloss but I'll have to stick to Meg's for now.



tripper_11, would I be correct if I assumed that you're holding the Makita on its "head" instead of the handle? I'll give it a shot next time around. I will try to up the speed along with the pressure if added pressure alone won't do the job.



The question as to whether I should go with #84 or #2 is still unanswered. :confused:



Although #2 was originally used for single-stage paint, is it as aggressive as #84 on BC/CC paint? Which one should I use? Either way, I'll end up using another W7000.

One thing to consider is that you are actually marring the paint with DACP and W7000. Have you tried folllowing it with a finer pad and swirl remover?



If that is not the answer, (worth a try) then the compound cleaner #84 is a good next step for you. If you are worried about it being too aggresive try it with a polishing pad first then move up to the cutting pad if it is not successfull.

Yeah, I'm aware that DACP can mar the paint - but I know this to be true only if you stop buffing too early (before the "buffered abrasives" have completely broken down). In my case, I buffed it out until it was invisible (no film left) but I did not wait for any dust to be visible. I did not notice any marring so I guess I did the right thing. :xyxthumbs Or did I? :o



I did follow #83 with #80 under a W-8000 polishing pad (didn't have any stronger stuff available then, hence my question) but that didn't do anything for the scratches.



The score thus far is:



#83 again but w/ "light-to-moderate" pressure - 1

#84 - 1

#2 - nil



Whichever I end up going with, I'll be using Meg's soft buff cutting pad (W-7000).
