meguiars #7 vs #3

According to the #7 directions on the bottle:

For use by hand, orbital buffer or D.A. polisher

Has anyone used #7 with a PC? What pad is best to use with #7?

Will definitely have to try it now with my PC.

Thanks Mike for the great How-To-Articles.

So, if you apply a carnauba wax over one of these "pure polishes", will that be effective in locking in the high gloss for an extended period of time?

Hey, Mike. I'm appreciating these detailed write-ups too. Imagine how awesome a Meguiar's forum on Autopia would be, if you could just talk them into becoming sponsors. :up

Yes, I have a low post count, showing I'm a newb. I will give my impression of #7. I used this on my 85 Capri single stage paint last fall.

The paint after 17 years had become somewhat oxidized on the surface. I went to the automotive paint supply store and got some 2000 grit wet/dry paper. I then used soapy water and lightly sanded the finish. I then rinsed and dried the car. It was of course dull looking and some sanding scratches were showing. I then took some FII to the paint by hand. After an hour I was satisfied with the surface, but it still was dull. I then applied the #7 in a very light coat, panel by panel removing as I went. The car began to glow, I could hardly contain my excitement as I worked faster to get to the final panel and wipe down. Wow, the car looked better than I could ever remember (I bought it used 14 years ago). Then I applied my Hi-Tech Yellow Wax and was simply amazed by the outcome. The car looked as good as a non-garaged, 17 year old, daily driver could look. That single stage paint really came back to life. My father-in-law even noticed that the car looked much different, he asked if I had it repainted!

I do not work for Meguires, I'm just a satisfied customer. An application of #7 every 4 mos has kept the finish looking great with no need for another color sanding.

There are no before and after photos. I do have another vehicle in need of a full on paint saving detial. I will take photos of this process.

This led to the introduction Meguiar’s #9 Swirl Remover, a “Cleaner/Polish.

This new product was basically, a pure polish with a “little cleaning ability, emphasis on “little. That is to say, Meguiar’s cleaner/polishes are more “polish than they are “cleaner.

Meguiar’s cleaner/polishes are “in-between products. They are intended for use when a dedicated paint cleaner, (or compound) is too aggressive, i.e. it offers too much abrading power, while a dedicated, or “Pure polish is too gentle and it doesn’t offer enough cleaning and/or abrading ability to move small particles of paint and thus remove the defect and level the surface.

A question for Mike, how often do you recommend using #9? I have been doing #7 + wax every 3-4 weeks. I use either #9 or paint cleaner + #7 + wax every 6-8 months. This is on a 2001 nissan with faint hairline scratches(almost invisible) here and there. Can I use the #9 on a more frequent basis(3-4months) and do away with the cleaner step altogether? Since you mentioned #9 has mild cleaners in it..

Next question is...Is doing a #9 + #7 being redundant? Can I skip #7 everytime I do #9?

I have lurked in here for quite a while and done searches and read discussions on this but have not read an official response from a Megs representative. Thanks for the very informative article about the polishes and thanks for any input you can provide.

I just ordered 32oz of the #81 professional Hand polish. I plan on doing a light application of #9 followed by the #81 and top it off with Paste Glaz. Should be a real winner:xyxthumbs

As a note, I presume the Body Shop Professional Hand Polish Part number M-8132 is the # 81. The M is for Meguiars, the 81 is prodcut designation and 32 is the amount in ounces :nixweiss it sounded right to me.

You got it! :bounce

The numbers are just part numbers. All of the bottles have them but they are more obvious on the Mirror Glaze line. ;)

M= Mirror Glaze Professional Line - Tan Bottles

A = Consumer Line - Maroon Bottles

G = Gold Class Line

D = Detailer Line

Since Mike got on this forum and his own forum their is renewed interest in Meguiars products. I think Barry should give Mike a raise.

ME TOO, I could use it to finish the Caddy! ;)

Mike is not just a Meguiar's Guy, he is a TRUE Car Guy! He is very true to himself and would back Meguiar's products even if he didn't work for the company. He has been doing it for years, even when he didn't work for the company.

If you look back to the early 90's on the internet you will find posts from him. He was working for Hewlett Packard at the time...

I have used for years #7 followed by #20 Polymer Sealant. The cleaners in #20 are not strong enough to remove all of the #7 so I get the best of both worlds: Ultra shine/depth and excellent protection! I now top the #20 with S100 for that extra "pop".
