Megs #40

Is #40 a water based dressing that contains the good type of silicone like 303 and Vinylex? Can any long time users of #40 tell me how it has performed on vinyl, rubber, and plastic over the long term?

I am using 303 but I want something with a little more shine to it but still be safe to use long term.

Thanks for any help.

I've use #40 almost 2 years now. I just bought another gallon a month ago. It has UV protection and I have not seen any long term problems with it at all. I use it on mostly everything except on dashboards. (little too shiny) I have Poorboy's Natural Look & BMSG for those. Use it on interior door panels, rubber around doors and trim, engine parts and wheel wells. It looks great on tires but it won't last very long. Overall a very good product.

I really don't know the exact ingredients in it. You may want to call Megs about that.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the responses guys. I purchased some and used it in the engine area on all the black plastic and it looks great, not too much shine but more than 303.

I called Megs customer support twice and got two different answers. One person said no silicone in #40, the other person said there is silicone in #40. One of them also told me the cleaner in #40 is petroleum based, the other person didn't know.

I sent a PM to Mike Philips and he has not responded. Probly very busy these days with the new Megs products.

stevet, I did the same exact thing the other day looking for an answer to that question (after reading on here about silicones), and was told that #40 was water-based with non-harmful silicones in it.

This is correct. All rubber and vinyl dressings have silicone in them. The issue is, what kind of silicone is it?

There are over 30,000 formulations of silicone. Not all are bad. The "safe" silicone is PDMS - polydimethylsiloxane. If the dressing you are using is white and milky looking, its very likely PDMS based.

The "bad" silicone is silicone oil. If the stuff you are looking at is clear and oily feeling, its likely silicone oil.

The cleaner in #40 is probably a petroleum distillate of some sort. 3M sells a similar product that does a similar thing. Personally I'd suggest using a proper non-solvent cleaner to prepare your tires or vinyl, then protect with a water based dressing.

I have used both #40 and 303 for about a year and can't really tell the difference. #40 is supposed to be a cleaner but it doesn't clean any better than the 303. I like both products though but #40 is alot cheaper.

Bret: Would one be safe in assuming that something like Mothers Preserves is water based with PDMS ingredients? It's pretty much impossible to find some of this info on the product websites, thats for sure.

Hellspawn,

Send a PM to Forrest, he is a Mothers rep and a member of Autopia. He is very helpful with questions about Mothers products.

since summer will be here soon i thought id try a protectant that wont make my dash shiny so i purchased #40 to try out and got a nice matte finish on my dash and door panels after a wipedown following application with a sponge and theres no oily/greasy feel to it IMO.it looks milky and white so from what i read its PDMS based, and has a strong leather like smell to it.not a bad product so far,but will see how long it lasts.
