Me, The PC, Or Poorboys...Help!

Ok....so I set out today to use my PC for the first time along with Poorboys 2.5. I was able to wash the car and clay no problem......after that, it was a different story!



I started with a yellow propel pad, PB 2.5, and the pc. I started with 4 dime size squirts and turned on the pc at dial set to 2. After a few passes I bumped it up to 5. I started on the bumper of my black G35 and after doing the vertical, horizontal, and the diagonal passes, I paused to check. I noticed some hazing that would not go away in addition to the swirls and scratches that I thought would be gone after using PB 2.5.



I double checked the pad chart to see if I used the wrong pad....so I referred to this thread:

I thought maybe I should switch to a polishing pad....blue propel it was. That did not help either (I figured it wouldn't but I was desperate).



Anyway after 6.5 hours with only one pass of PBs 2.5 with a yellow pad, and one pass with PBs 2.5 on a blue propel....I found the car to be shiny but no luck with the swirl removal or scratches on the car.....more importantly, I could not get rid of some the hazing.....could it be due to not keeping the pad flat while making passes on the curves of the car? did I burn the paint?



Any advice from on how to remove the hazing? At this point I am not as concerned about the swirl marks but wish they were gone....kinda disappointed with PBs but I know its something I am doing wrong.



Trying to use:



1. PBs 2.5

2. VMG

3. EX

4. Nattys blue



Using available propel pads 6" yellow, blue, green, black and 4" yellow, blue, green with a pc

Got most of the product out...you can see reflection of electric cord with hazing in the middle of the door.

Those are some pretty small pics, so it might be hard to tell. Did the polish ever get opaque while you were working it?

The onle pic with the polish on it almost looks like there was too much product on the pad. Was the pad seasoned well before it hit the paint? (seasoned meaning "loaded")
 
It's a little hard to see from the picture, but I would say you need to break down the polish a little more to get rid of the hazing. On black, I'm not sure you won't get some hazing anyway and have to follow it with a finer polish, and I'm not sure if VM has enough bite to remove the SSR2.5 hazing. Someone else with a little more experience with these will have to chime in.
 
I will have to upload bigger pics when I get home tonite...but the PBs 2.5 hazed and even after rubbing it with a MF towel.....

Will an agressive polish clean up the haze? Has anyone experienced this before where they see hazing and use another product to clean it up and get a clean surface? Is this normal?

A less aggressive polish would be the next move. Always use the least agressive that will do the job. I think you may have used too aggressive of a compound.

Never fear though, it can be repaired. Try some PB1 in a small spot. Work it until it turns opaque and breaks down. That should cure your ill.

If PB1 doesn't cut it, then go a little more aggressive.



In the future, start with the least agressive to fix the problem.

It would have been BETTER to try SSR1 first, but 2.5, when worked long enough, breaks down almost as well as SSR1. I don't think you damaged your paint. My G35 did the exact same thing after using Zaino, and the polishes I tried never got rid of the hazing completely. Don't be afraid to crank the PC up to 6 when polishing. Use a polishing pad, prime it, and work the 2.5 until it starts to dust, then wipe what's remaining off with a MF.
 
I also use the yellow Propel with SSR2.5. Do you remember if the SSR2.5 dried up while you were working with it? I find that I have to give a spray of water onto the pad to keep it moist and not end up with dry SSR2.5 with the yellow pad which would definitely cause hazing.



Now that the hazing part is gone, I found that with the PC and SSR2.5, it does not remove swirls that quickly. I usually spread the product at low speed and then do a 4 pass consisting of vertical, horizontal, diagonal, vertical, horizontal, diagonal and finally back to vertical, while applying sufficient pressure. Really, the PC, yellow propel and SSR2.5 is still a very mild combo compared to a rotary. I even find with the 7 passes, I still have to move the PC slowly with enough pressure. After that, I follow up with SSR1 with a blue propel.

2. Used too much product (PB 2.5) 4 dime size squirts on the outer part of the pads equally spaced



3. Went to 2.5 when I should have tried 1.0 or 2.0 first.



I thought I worked the product in for a good amount of time doing all the passes but realized if I used to much product.....it probably would have never broken down.



I was not able to remove swirl or scratch marks...is this something I wont see with 2.5 or should I be more agreesive with the pc?

Like everyone else said, from the pics it looks like you might have used too much product and didn't break it down enough.

It doesn't remove everything but did remove the majority of imperfections.

Yeah, try less product like what blkyukon showed. SSR1 is more of a finishing polish. Don't expect it to take out anything other than hazing.



Less is better. Once it has broken down, you just wipe off and then repeat another series of passes with more product if you see that the swirls are still there. Many repeats with just enough product is much better than 1 series of passes with a lot of product.

Steve (the owner of Poorboy's) says to NOT mist the pads when using PB polishes.
 
I started all over today and this time started with the pc set @ 2 until the product was applied...after moved to speed 4 and worked in the product...and bumped up to 5 to work product to the final stage....wiped with a MF.....and it worked!



Lesson learned:

1. Less product goes a long way. Initinally two dime size drops and 1 drop (per panel) for the rest of the car.

2. Interestingly, I did lightly mist my pads and it worked fine for me.

3. It takes a lot of practice with the pc....6.5 hours for one coat yesterday, took only 3.5 hours for four coats today.

4. Not all scratches will come out but the majority will....car is nice and shiny!



Only two more cars to go but not anytime soon....I'm beat! Bow down to you detailers who do this for a living!



A big thanks to everyone for their advice and in particular spoiledman for willing to give me a hand! Blkyukon for posting your detailed info on the breakdown of PBs...initially when I got into trouble, I jumped on the computer and looked for your thread!
