Mats Glued To Carpet! (pic)

Ok, you guys are pretty amazing when it comes to car care solutions, so how do I get this glue off my carpets! I don't have any idea why the previous owner decided to glue the mats down, but I would really like to try to get it off. It appears to be one of those adhesives that stays tacky and the mats come up pretty easy as shown in the pic, but what could I use to get the glue off?

Oh yeah, he did it on both driver and passenger side, wouldn't floor mats have been much easier? :dunno

A 55 gallon drum of Goof Off? :wha

That's all I can think of. I don't know if a steam cleaner or something like it would work, but it's worth a shot I guess

steam is your only option. you can always clean around it.

the previous owner was obviously VERY lazy

Thanks for the tip guys, I'll give em a try this weekend and let you know how it goes. By the way I have covered those mats with good floor mats but they keep sliding up because of the glued on mats. It's driving me crazy!

If you really want to get rid of that glue . One idea if you are good with your hands and some basic tools you can purchase a replacment carpet at automotive interiors & accessories, inc.(1-800-814-7533) cost me about $124.00 (depends where you live)not that hard and you can also pick whatever color you want. Maybe you should look into.

Wow. I guess what people do to their cars never ceases to amaze me. :flamed

I have to agree with steam if you want to get them off. I still think you're going to have a heck of a mess behind, but at least you can get the mats off. New carpet is ideal, but may not be an option in your situation for $$ reasons?

Yeah, I thought about just replacing the carpet but it's in great shape except for this. That's probably gonna be the solution though. I'm going to give it a try today and I'll let you know how it goes. Funny thing about this is the previous owner kept the car in beautiful shape except for this stupid move. Wish I could find him to ask what the heck he was thinking when he did it.

What kinda car is that anyway? The seat looks like it is out of an Integra, but as far as I know Acura never offered that shade of beige.

I think I did it

I got most of it off and it looks pretty good. The glue was just on top and not down into the carpet so I used duct tape to get some of it off. after testing several different cleaners on the bottom of the mats I found that safety solvent softened it up so I sprayed some on a cloth and started rubbing lightly on the glue. When it softened up it rolled into a ball like a wad of gum and I just picked it off. Then I used GRSstilez's Carpet regimen with the Oxi Clean to clean up. The whole process took me about 1 1/2 hours and it's not perfect but I'm happy with it. Here's a few more pics of the process. Last pic is no flash that's why the color looks different. Thanks for all your help guys.

Oh, the car is a 98 Mustang GT.

Thanks, at least my floor mat will stay put now. Still need to do the passenger side, he glued that one too. As a Mustang owner yourself matthiasj I'm sure you were able to tell. :bigups

Sweet job a 100% improvement from before! Maybe pass a note along to the previous owner that if he doesn't want his floor mats to move in the future, buy the ones that fit the car! Heh

>> I used duct tape to get some of it off

heh. I like this one.
"If duct tape won't fix it .... it's ain't broke" (sic)

LOL, the carpet WAS pretty dirty but I think the big difference was that the flash went off on the before pics but it didn't go off latter in the day for the after pic. Strange thing is they are really tan colored but the pic makes it look gray.
