match backing plates with pad makers?

When you buy pads from another company do you have to use their backing plate or would a backing plate from another company work as long as it is the same size as the pads? I have Meg's backing plate and soft buff pads but I might be getting new pads made either by propel or Lake Country. Will the Meg's backing plate work with either one of them or do I need to purchase one of those brand's plates with the pads?

I never change backing plates when I use different pads. Some people have had the plates cookie-cut their pads when the sizes were very different, but it never happened to me. I'd just find the plate you like (I like the flex plates even if they don't really flex that much) and keep any others you have as spares.

I think the flex plates offer a little margin of cushioning, which is great. As for "gotta have" type of plates, its not necessary other then to save S/H.....Just make sure the plate doesnt extend beyond the backing material of the pad......This is where damage to the pad can occur....

When i use DAs pads i put on my 6" BP. I prefer it this way for these pads, but on the SFX ones, either a 5" or a 6" one.

I generally prefer the BP to reach as far to the edge of the pad without going past the velcro part.
