Some stores carry a privately-branded 7-day release tape, too . . . I think I've bought "Ace" (maybe it was "Tru-Valu") brand for less than equivalent 3M tape, and some from Wal-Mart that I don't recall the brand name of, but it was much, much cheaper than 3M.
IMO, if you were actually painting something and needed a tape that could sit for a week and not deteriorate and leave residue, I'd spring for 3M. For detailing, since I just need it to not leave residue and release easily after a few hours, knock-off brands will do.

P.S. FYI, the knockoff-brands of tapes were blue, just like the equivalent 3M tape.
