Maniacal Wetsanding (S2000)

Those original paint pix looked like the shop applied it with a garden hose (or maybe a spatula). I would make a point of taking the before and after pictures to them and asking for your money back....

really nice pictures man

what did u use under the sand paper as support

also, its possible to remove 2000 grit marks wiith the optimum hyper compound and a PC??

absolutely fantastic work !!! I"m in aww!

but from your observations and the pros, what kind of "clear coat" reduction did you do to that thin Honda paint. I'm an ex s2000 owner so I know how thin it is.

thx again guys...

sumptimwong: no, I didn't *completely* flatten it, but it's close. :) Basically I used the 1500 until I had no more untouched "low spots" or shiny paint showing through, then I went over in the other direction with the 2000 to remove the 1500 marks. The key is to check your work often. IF this were a factory paint job, I'd have started with 2000 and relied on a paint thickness gauge to tell me when to stop.

You COULD do it by hand with OTC products, but I wouldn't recommend it. You could also pull the transmission out of your car without a lift or the proper tools, but I wouldn't recommend that either. :)

I went through one piece of 1500 and one of 2000, cut to fit the dual-layer foam sanding pads I have. They're probably still usable, actually.

JakesCakes: yup, with a PC, a 4" SFX1 (yellow) pad and OHC, that's what I used on the rocker panel. Worked like magic (after about 3-4 slooow passes).

tumbler (simon?): probably a pretty significant reduction, but again it's not a factory job. I'd be extremely leary of working on a factory job like this without the proper tools - a paint thickness gauge, preferably multi-layer reading gauge... for like $3500 heh... at LEAST a basic gauge.

yah its me simon .. paint thickness gauge would be the key..

What does a paint thickness gauge tell you? Total film build correct. It's still your guess as to how much of that is clear.

True, but you can make an educated guess.

OR you can get a multilayer gauge (for about $3500) :)

Thanks again. Took another shot today. Stripped the AIO+Souveran and did 3x ZFX'd Z2Pro with Souveran a day or two after that. It really IS all in the prep... :) The Souveran really did change the look of the Z2 Pro, though, adding a warmth and depth to the paint.

This is more about paint texture than true reflection, since at this angle with this lighting, you can make just about anything look good :)

You can really see that there IS still texture in the paint, though it's significantly reduced compared to adjacent panels.
