Detailing laws of the trade. What are they?

Always Clay before polishing.

Detail Law (Yes) or (no)
 
detailing law...never clean the car to the finial wipe down, then spray the wheel wells in a windy area...don't ask me why

Well Fish - I would say yes, if they pay for it. I charge an extra 40-50 bucks for a clay (if needed).
I don't like to wax without a clay, it's like putting lipstick on a dirty pig.
I always let the customer know if they need it done.

I guess I might have misunderstood what this was...however I clay every detail that I do at no extra cost...its about the end result for me...the clay is cheap enough that you can get quite a few cars from the bar..I also charge enough so that I don't have to compromise my jobs.

Claying before polishing is absolutely mandatory if you aren't aware of the last time it was clayed. If I know I just clayed this car a month ago and it just needs a light polish, then I won't do it. Especially after I inspect the paint and know there isn't any IFO concern. If it had a good layer of sealant put on it then that will resist much of the damage that clay helps to repair. If this is my first time with the car then clay is built into the price of the polishing as a required step. Skipping the clay would be cutting a major corner in the proper process of detailing a car.

Agreed. For one thing, I don't see why it shouldn't be included, seeing as how it takes very little time compared to the overall detail (in most cases). The only time I could justify paying or charging an extra (or exorbitant) fee in addition to the detail is for major contaminant removal. I clay during the wash (when i do clay) and it takes an extra 20 minutes tops.

Two buckets depends on how dirt the car is for me...Troy I don't see cars that are that bad here...however I always use one for wheels and another for the paint.

If you can't use two buckets then you at least need to be rinsing the mitt. When I wash I wash with a mitt in one hand and a hose in the other. I rinse the mitt before going in for more soap from my grit guard enabled Wolfgang bucket. It is so important to keep that mitt as clean as possible. If I am polishing the car afterwards anyway, then I'll be honest and admit that I am really not as careful as I should be during the washing and claying phases. If I know I'm going to bust out a level two or three polish on a yellow pad anyway then I value speed over care in those cases.
 
For me and the cars I do, either have never been clayed and or the client has no idea what clay is other then as in modeling clay...for me I feel clay is the almost mandatory pre-step to polishing.
 
I'm more anal...3 bucket method.
1 for the paint
1 for the wheels
1 rinse bucket (changed after I do the wheels)

So yes for law

Their is no way I would attempt to detail a customers car without claying because it saves me the work and not them the money.

I mean to clay a car during wash only takes about 10-20 minutes and most customers no nothing about clay. Clay makes it easier to apply and remove products and the curb appeal is mostly for me anyway.. I like being proud of what i have done and the times when i have decided not to use clay left me disappointed and not the customer....They were happy but because my VISION is forever tainted I was very disappointed in the results.

I charge upfront the cost of a properly detailed vehicle...

Man law charge the [cost] of a Properly detailed vehicle upfront.

For my own cars yes... For customers cars no because I don't wash cars. I only detail them..

So for a customers car.. Foam gun, bucket for rinse and separate bucket for mitt...

I guess i just agreed with you some kind of way so...

I guess 2 bucket man law:rockon
