Hey Wiz - you got me wanting to get a Hitachi rt angle drill after your review on another post. What buffers do you have and use?
For rotary polishing, I have and use Makita 9227c and the Hitachi SP18 VA. The Makita, since I changed out the grease in the head runs cool and quiet. The Hitachi starts up a bit faster, but not so fast it's difficult to pick up the polish without flinging, but is a little hotter and noisier. I like and can recommend both. The cord on the Hitachi is better, and I use my own backing plates, not the ones that come with either.
For tight work with rotary action I have the Hitachi D10YB 3/8” Right Angle Drill, that's variable speed up to 2300rpms and I use the mandrels and backing plates I showed in the other post. I also cut the foam pads I use on that machine out of the used up pads from my other machines.
Finally, I have the Makita BO6040 dual action sander for taking out light scratches and swirls. I have a random orbital and have hand several of those type machines in the past and have tested the Makita against every other machine that's used for that purpose and the Makita is my choice without reservation.
I have lots of pads and backing plates in different sizes to use in different combinations depending on how aggressive I want to be and what will work on the kind of paint I'm dealing with and how tight is the working area.
That setup lets me get almost everything I do without having much hand work outside waxing of course.
All the best,
Robert
