Ok so I got this from Coastal Tool for christmas and I want to make sure I have everything I need to get started

Makita 9227CX3 Polisher with Polishing Bonus Kit

Looking at what came with this what do I need to make it work with 5.5-6" pads? Did this package come with a backing plate? Will the wool pad supplied be good enough to use or should I buy a different one?

I plan to use the system one polishes and so I want to make sure I get a wool pad for cut and a white foam for finish polishing.

TIA.

Rule of thumb..... Never buy wheels in kits.... Buy the wheel for the wheel alone and that's it.

Yes it has a backing plate. However you're going to replace it so it's a mute point. Why?? Because that backing plate is for 7"pads. If your looking to use the 5" pads you need a different backing plate. Next up the stock BP's are usually sub par anyways. I tend to buy the same BP's as the pads I'm using.

The Makita WP is junk. I'm not sure if the one in the PIC is a a Makita Pad but if it is you'll see right out of the box that it's just a flimsy POS. Buy new from a brand name you trust.

Your lack of pad knowledge is showing. Not a big deal but to educate you just a wee bit They make about as many Wool variations as they do Foam these days. make sure you educate yourself on the product you intend to use and match your pad accordingly. They have cutting twist wool, Full Sythetic wool, Finishing wool, Poly wool. Compounding wool, The matte and the twist of the wool makes all the difference in the cutting abilities. If you pick your product up at a local supplier ask them which piticuler wool pad you're going to need. If you order it online call up the manufacturer and see what they recommend.

Same with the Foam pad. White is only finishing in certian brands. I have white cutting foam pads and White finishing foam pads. Make sure you pick the correct one.

Well, no sh*t Sherlock...what a great/helpful insight on your part. This person is obviously new at this and lacks experience/knowledge. I'm sure that is why he is posting here...to obtain knowledge from more experienced members. He is simply asking questions to understand pads and he makes no claim to have any current knowledge on the this topic.

Your comment is like a doctor telling a 1st year medical student..."Your lack of open heart surgery knowledge is showing" when the student asks a simple question.

Funny, the backing plate that came with my makita does fine, but I use 3M 7.5" pads. If you use smaller pads, they make smaller BP's for them. There are a lot of brands of wool and foam, I have tried several and prefer 3M.

Matt, your post was certainly helpful and insightful as well. Additionally, your analogy was just as effective.:bigups

To the OP. See if you can find the 3M backing plate, its been getting great reviews. If you are looking to use 5"+ pads you may want a 4.75" pad, danase has the LC one I believe.

Furthermore, if you are interested in System One, they use the edge system and their own pad, which is an Edge combo Wool/Foam. I think AG has the package for about 100 bucks. In this case you wouldnt need a BP, just an edge adapter.

Read some threads, there are tons of them. You have alot of options. GL

Guys, people learn a lot from threads like this but let's please keep the criticism out and the language appropriate. Thanks!

I don't mind the criticism, I ended up getting 7.5" LCC pads and a 8oz bottle of the system one polish. I skipped on getting wool b/c I think it will be too abrasive for what I need. My car is in decent condition. I got an yellow foam and white foam pad.

I have some Menzerna IP from previous details with my old PC 7424 but I want to try something new.

Brad your kidding right? There's absoultly nothing in any of thse post crtical or unapproirate in language... What exactly are you refereing too? Mine, Junes and NSX post are nothing but complete truth and solid solid information. Something that every new person should probably read. This guy is new to the rotary and pad selection. Stating that is a statement of truth not comething critical. If you took as anything other than that I apologize. Apparently I missed ego proper manners in boarding school LOL.

Travsm3 Good choice on the selection. Although I wouldn't rule out wool all the way. I know I frequently use several products that cannot be used with foam at all. If you find a great match in the products you choose awesome. But if you experiment out there with other products you may find you need a wool pad or two lying around just in case. But with everything practice is the best educator. Whril away. And sorry again for any offense I seem have caused.

Jakerooni:

I believe this is what Brad B. is referring to, at least as far as criticism is concerned, unless something was edited afterward. The statement is an insult. The OP is asking for advice on wool pads and part of your "advice" is to tell him he doesn't know anything about them. Brilliant!

I don't know what "ego proper manners" class you're referring to in your second post, but if the class had anything to do with how not to be condescending or derogatory then, yeah, you missed it. LOL.

Is the system one polishes the same one that we saw on Jay Lenos website, and if so, doesn't it come with the two sided wool pad? I believe it to be an edge pad. Just curious, it is tough to keep all of these products straight.

Aware of beating a dead horse (terribly cruel I might add), "Your lack of pad knowledge is showing." is a factual statement.

And, "condescending or derogatory", LOL.

If the OP is offended (which is me), then there isn't a problem IMO. I am a big boy and I can take it. I am married for gods sake so you know what I mean.

What does lack of sex have to do with this? :grinno:

Btw, good luck with the Makita. Get yourself some junk cars to practice on!
