Hey everybody. Our neighbor has a 1990 Honda Civic. Paint's in terrible condition(surface feels like sandpaper:( ). Anyways, they want to get it repainted. They're keeping the car, so they want something that'll last. I'll be detailing it for them after the repaint.:D They look like they're getting the Maaco 'value plus' package. It's their second highest end paint package. Does anyone know if it's any good??:nixweiss Is it clearcoat or not?? Is it pretty much like new domestic factory paint jobs?? I doubt it's as good as Audi or VW paint, but I don't really know...

Anybody know the quality of finish??

Thanks.

How much longer are they going to keep the car for?

I would say for most paint jobs. You get what you pay for. I know they don't sandblast to the metal/primer. They acid etch the old paint and then paint over it.

The Maaco job might be borderline. But if they are only going to keep the car for another 3-5 years, then I don't see a need for a top quality paint job.

Bingo. Macco is garbage. If this is a car they like and plan on keeping tell them to invest the $$$ and get a quality repaint. A few years down the road they will be happy they did.

Let's not condem all Macco's...they are independently owned and vary from franchise to franchise. No your not going to get a top quality paint job with stripping and attention to the fine details but we're talking about a 1990 HONDA...book value ...not much

putting 2-3k in a paint job just doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

I wonder if a careful detailing (clay & 'polish') BEFORE the paint job would bring some life back to the Honda paint (which was very good from the factory) I'm guessing that it is clearcoated, and if so, there is hope...

Hum...... now this has me worried.

I got a new Toyota Matrix and the dealer on the last service managed to scratch up the front quarter pannel (from leaning into the engine bay, may small surface scratches and 2 scratches that are down to the primer).

The dealer did offer to do a repaint of the area but unfortuanlly won't let me bring it to a bodyshop of my choice.

With the paint being only 3 months old (silver) i'm fairly certain matching the colour would not be a big probem, BUT......do you think i'll run into fading problems in 1-2 years? (this car is going to be kept for 12-14 years).

My other alternative that i'm considering is bringing it to a bodyshop I trust. I know they will do a very good job because I've had other cars done there and 10 years later, it still looks perfect. The only thing is that I would end up having to pay for it ($350 if they spray fender only, but he said he might have to spray the hood too just to make it match perfectly, $500 total)

Do you guys think it is a good idea to have somebody I trust fix the probem caused by the dealer (at my cost) or should I take the chance with the dealer and if they screwup fix it myself?

See which bodyshop your dealer uses. Then go there and check it out for yourself.

I'd say let the dealer fix the problem.

If it fades later on, then pay to get it fixed. But most likely it won't.

It's their screwup. You have every right to expect factory-quality paint on your entire car, so I'd let them do it and guarantee it. In writing, natch.

When my car got in an accident 3 months after we bought it, we took it to the dealer's bodyshop. They did an excellent job on the paint. It matches almost perfectly (silver). Only under certain lights can you see a VERY small difference. It's been a little over three years and it's still looking good. I don't think you should have any problems with your dealer's bodyshop. If you do, take it back and make them fix it right.

Wow!

Thanks guys for all your thoughts and input.:bow

Have you been to their website?? www.maaco.com

It describes the package there. Their high-end one doesn't sound too bad, but ya never know until you see it on a car, right??

The Honda's paint is pretty bad. Never waxed. Massively faded(started out as a sky blue, but now is almost a light grey!). I'm pretty sure there's almost NO clearcoat left.:scared

It only has about 65k well-driven miles on it, so I think they'll keep it for AT LEAST five years?!?

It doesn't really have that much paint area(surface). It really shouldn't cost that much at all. But they don't seem to do it by surface area. Are there any other national chain paint places that are better???

Thanks!
