Lube for clay bars

What do you all use to lube the clay bar? I currently use Speed Shine, is there something a little less expensive to use?

I use Meguiars Final Inspection.
I have found that it provides just the right lubricity and it makes for easy clean-up.
I have tried the lube that comes with Clay Magic, car wash soap and water, and Poorboys Spray and wipe and still prefer the Final Inspection.
Just my opinion!

Try doing your clay step while you wash the vehicle . You'll find the soapy water to be a fine lubricant and the best part is it don't cost much.

:yeah

I usually clay while washing & I find the sudsy, soapy water (using NXT) has excellent lubricity & I don't get any streaking, smudging, or smearing using this method.

:yeah . NXT is my favorite soap to clay with. So far NXT is my all around favorite soap.

I tried to use the lube with the clay magic and found I made a bigger mess. I washed my entire car and then went back and a panel at a time put more soap on it and used the clay. Rinse and then wash car over again.

Come to think of it the last time I used it on my expedition when I was finished I noticed the paint was not slick feeling. It would grip your hand if you tried to slid it across the panel. Made the noise if you clean you window and drag your hand over it. :eek

I'm a huge fan of claying while I wash. It's a real time saver. On average I save probably 20-30 minutes vs. washing and then going back and claying. Plus it saves money in the long run.

Can you explain further, I believe I understand what you are saying, however, I might not. :brick

how long does the clay last if u used it with the car wash while washing the car.

depends more on the size of the vehicle & how dirty/grimy the surface is rather than what type of lube you're using.

As a very general statement, a claybar the size of an AutoZone-purchased ClayMagic blue clay should last about 5 to 7 vehicles.

I don't know the size of the ClayMagic clay in ounces or grams .... but size matters.

If you drop it on the ground it lasts 5 minutes.

I understand claying process, however, I think he clays while washing? I have read/done it after washing and wash again.

I have tried the claying while I wash and I like it. I usually wash the panel, clay while it's still wet and soapy, then wash it again. It sounds like it might increase the washing time by a great deal, but that's not the case. It also saves you from having to buy a QD to use as a lube. I think it really eliminates then need to wash and dry, clay, wash and dry. It gets rid of the redundant steps for me.

hmm. that's odd. I read that too that it shoudl last you 5 to 6 cars.
but i have been using the same clay on cars for over a year and still works just as good. I wonder if that is some marketing hype..
but anyway, i use Z6 to clay and i go through one a car. It does get expensive.

I think it all depends on the amount of contaminents being removed. You can tell if your bar has too much in it .. most weekend warriors will probably have to worry more about the bar drying out then getting too full to use.

after a while you've just got to toss it 'cause all the grime & crude that you're taking off the surface is embedded in the clay.

You can knead the clay, fold it, twist it, whatever. The clay will continue to "work" but it'll have so much junk in it that you've got to ask yourself "I've taken so much junk off so many cars, do I really want to keep using this clay that has become contaminated with impurities".

Old, used-up clay could introduce scratches & marring depending on what kind of junk you've been taking off. You're trying to make the surface better (cleaner) by claying but, actually, you could be making it worse using old, contaminated clay.

IMHO, $10 for ClayMagic at AutoZone is cheap surface insurance.

At autopia-carcare.com, sonus clay sells for $10, and then each additional bar after is only $8.25. No lube, but using the soap method, this saves money. Shipping is cheaper too.
