LSP safe quik detailers...how do you tell?

I was wondering how to tell which qds were LSP safe..i used to think they all were but I remember a thread saying not ask of them were..so I went ahead and checked the ones I have to find that they all say they clean but doesn't mention if they're lsp safe..they're all otc and majority of them came with claybar kits if that helps

Outside of being some sort of strong cleaner, what exactly would make a QD non-LSP safe? I can't think of any QD on my shelf (and I have tons) that I would think would contribute to any sort of LSP degradation outside the normal act of applying it (friction). Even the ones that state they have some sort of wax/protection in it - those people in the camp of "many layers" should just subscribe to the fact that it is "layering" on the existing LSP.

My opinion on this subject would be that you're over-thinking it. Use whatever QD makes you smile that particular day and don't worry about it.

Some QDs do affect a solvent-action on some LSPs under some conditions. Yeah, there are a lot of qualifiers in that statement, but I've had it happen/not. Fortunately the "not" is much more common. Some examples to watch out for:

M34 has killed off an already almost-dead coat of Souveran, requiring me to redo the vehicle. A different QD woulda helped that LSP hang on until the next wash, shoulda used something like Griot's SpeedShine instead. BTW, the SpeedShine is utterly Accumulator-proof, always.

QuikShine has left *very* light pseudo-holograms when used on layered 476S, but note that layering 476S can sometimes be problematic anyhow. Still, it happened with that QD on long-cured 476S and it has never happened not with the other QDs I used on that vehicle/LSP combo. Fortunately they were so light that nobody else would've ever spotted them, and they went away with a quick wash.

FK425 has left *serious* (and I mean OMG-awful) pseudo-holograms that I couldn't buff away, also on Collinite 476S. This was on a *severely* compromised paintjob (my beater-Audi) and I suspect that the paint's pitting/microfissures/other issues held residual/excess wax that was then affected by some solvent-action from the FK425. It was an absolute mess; I fixed it with an application of 845 (which, IME, is a good fix for most any pseudo-hologram issue involving 476S). That incident was so terrible that I've quit using FK425 on waxes, reserving it for use on sealants (yeah, yeah, I know... and I never had any problems with it messing up waxes before, but I'm not gonna go through that again, ever).

I've used FK 425 on a variety of waxes (both old and fresh applications) including Collinite and have never had the sort of issue you describe. While we're only sharing our one-off personal experiences, it would lead me to believe that some sort of outside factor that you mentioned caused this. About the only QD I have that is even finicky is Poorboy's QD+, which I attribute to it having a lot of wax in it (you can see the particles settle in the bottom of the bottle) and my improper removal (either not using enough pressure or a dry MF). Always good to hear someone else's experiences.

JaredPointer- Yeah, it cerainly surprised me to say the least! Here I had the car all done (this was before I bought it, and I was about to return it to the original owner), thought I'd give it a last-touch once-over with the FK425 and *ZAP* Totally [messed] it up and didn't spot it until I'd done the whole car (you know how holograms, pseudo or real, can be hard to spot under some lighting).

And here I'd used FK425 to *remove* pseudo-holograms from the Yukon when I'd messed up "layering" 476S... :nixweiss

Yeah, that wildcard factor was almost certainly related to residual LSP in/on the compromised paint, but you know, "once bitten.." and all that.

Alexshimshimhae- You know how I'm always :nono about your trying more/new products? Well this is an exception. I *really* like the SpeedShine for use over waxes. Next time you're ordering from a Griot's vendor anyhow (I wouldn't make it a special order), get some and post about what *you* think of it.
