Lowes.. going the way of Home Depot

I would of informed the manager that its not my job to stand around and wait for him to fix his crappy self checkout machines. :nono

Seriously...tell him to hire a cashier to fix them so he doesn't have to do it himself. I always find it comical at HD how at a busy time they have 1-2 people "supervising" the self-checkout...and I kind of doubt that with all the problems that they get more customers through the 4 (if they are all working, which they usually aren't) self-checks than they would through 2 manned stations...so what's the point? I guess that guy who's sitting at the home office with his finger on the thermostat for all the stores must be sitting there monitoring the number of cashiers, too :p

Seriously, I had an HVAC tech tell me once that all the CompUSA stores had their HVAC controlled from the home office, and that if he was working on the system, he had to call that home office to have them adjust it to see if it was working :nixweiss

I like self checkout. It means I don't have to explain things to the person behind the counter. I never ask advice anymore in either of the two home center type stores. I spend more time explaining what I need only to then have the pimple faced teenager look at me and say "Dude, I have no idea". But then again, I guess I could ask the guy in his mid 50's who works in the tile dept. He rides his bicycle to work because of his 3rd drunk driving conviction. You're better off knowing exactly what you want BEFORE you step into most any store these days. I guess that's why they call it MINIMUM wage. All you get is the bare minimum.

Amen to that! The HD here is absolutely terrible..there are like 6 people working in the entire store and when you ask them where something is they either tell you the wrong end of the giant store...or act like you are really messing up their day and making them do pushups or something...its awful.....the Lowe's i have been to are better, but still not great.

I'd have to say i'm for the self check outs. I've used them at Lowes and Walmart. The Walmart cashiers make me loose faith in the future of our society!!

How long have they been open? It seems like when they open a new store they staff it up right (knowledgable help, plenty of cashiers) but as time goes on, either from attrition or some sort of dastardly plan, they go downhill.

I work at lowes in La, we have 4 self checkouts they are use alot and so are the registers. Not many complaints at all, most customers like the opition to use that . Also have you guys tried out the grout and tile sponge they carry a whole lot better that hd. The professional line is yellow and on the cleaning products asle. The orange one is in the flooring dept. called Tilesolutions grout and tile sponge one has a bug scrubber on one side, I use them now and use them with the rinseless wash no marring. :woohoo:

When I said that they start out strong and go downhill after a while, I was referring to both HD and Lowe's. We had HD around here way before Lowe's, and HD was great when they first opened, but after they put all the Rickel's and Channels out of business, they got terrible. HD was always and still is filthy, though (my friend Jr. usually has an asthma attack if I drag her in there), while Lowes has always been cleaner and better lit.

For me, if there are no self check outs I won't shop there. I don't care to wait while some clown hunts for his/her checkbook in front of me...

Meanwhile they look at the cashier as if she is moving too slow...i mean they know it costs money so why not at least some form of payment out and ready for them???

The Lowes by my house in San Clemente is terrible. There is no one helpful in the store. And trying to make a return is a horrible process. They always seem to put the weakest person at the returns counter.

I like the self-checkout at Home Depot when you have items with regular bar codes. It takes no time to check out since there is never a line. I wonder if that will change.

Lowes only just came to Ontario this spring but the closest store to me is about 90mins away. Home Depot is still pretty good both my local ones keep 8-10 lanes of cashiers open and only have 4 self checkout stations. I normally just go to the contractors checkout anyway in most cases its faster.

this is the same scenario with my experience with best buy, and that's why i refuse to shop there...

I must be lucky as both HD and Lowes are pretty well staffed near me and the few times I've asked where what they know. I've also returned an item before and it was quick and painless.

well I work for Lowes. The biggest reason for the self checkout is because you have people who come in buying 2 cartloads of stuff that take forever to check out, and you have people behind them in line with one tiny plumbing fitting they need waiting 10 minutes for a 3 dollar purchase. Of course none of that would be necessary if the stores were properly staffed. But keeping stores fully staffed is something that retail higher ups forgot when Sam Walton died, now they think the best way to make money is to cut payroll and hope the customers don't notice the nose-diving customer service, lol. (worked well for Circuit City didn't it? firing 3400 of their most knowledgable and highest paid salespeople... that company is only spiraling towards bankruptcy now)

Still, please don't compare us to Home Depot, I've shopped there before also, and Lowes is MILES ahead of them customer service wise. I always do my best at least to help the customer. I get a lot out of my job, but that's because it's my part time job while I'm in college I guess, and not my career, like it is for some.
